No. 1 Villanova Overcoming 'constant Challenge' Of Championship Hangover

... is the only Division I school that hasn’t lost consecutive games the last four years. While seniors Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins shot a combined 0 for 14 in the game’s first 30 minutes, sophomores Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson kept the Wildcats in the game. Virginia led 49-37 with 9:45 left when the Wildcats finally got going and took the lead with a 13-0 run sparked by Hart’s first basket of the game and Jenkins’ first two baskets of the game – all threes. There were then five lead changes and four ties in the final 5½ minutes before Villanova inbounded with 11 seconds left and the game tied at 59. Hart dribbled near the top of the key, then drove down the lane, missing with two seconds left. Di Vincenzo, to the left of the basket, skied and tipped the ball in as the buzzer sounded and the crowd roared. After the refs watched the replay to make sure the ball left Di Vincenzo's hand before the buzzer, the packed house at the Wells Fargo Center went nuts for a second time in a minute. Villanova shot 4 for 22 in the first half and 13 for 18 in the second half. The Wildcats stayed in the game with 20 for 24 shooting from the foul line. What it means. With the ...

... Petersen Events Center earlier this month when Miami beat them by 26. The Cardinals doubled it easily. No. 15 Wisconsin 82, Penn State 55. Bronson Koenig scored 20 points Tuesday night and No. 15 Wisconsin shut down Penn State in the second half on its way to an 82-55 victory in Madison, Wis. The Badgers (17-3, 6-1 Big Ten) started to shake off the Nittany Lions (11-10, 3-5) after Ethan Happ came alive. He struggled in the first half, shooting 2 of 6 from the field, in part because Penn State's Mike Watkins blocked him twice in the span of about 5 minutes. But Happ asserted himself to open the second half, scoring on the Badgers' first two possessions to spark a 13-2 run that put Wisconsin up 52-38 on Vitto Brown 's 3-pointer. They wouldn't be threatened the rest of the way. Brown finished with 16 points, while Happ added 14 and eight rebounds. Penn State shot better than 52 percent in the first half, the second-best any team has put up against the Badgers to open a game this season. That ...

... sellout crowd. Villanova's rare blemish on its national championship season was losing to the Pirates in the Big East Tournament title game. The Wildcats took care of this one with ease. Darryl Reynolds threw down a monster dunk and Jenkins followed with a 3-pointer for a 20-7 lead. Brunson hit a 3 and Josh Hart quickly turned a steal into a dunk for a 20-point edge early in the second half. The Wildcats made 12 of 26 3-pointers and held Seton Hall to just 16 field goals. But look beyond the box score to find what impressed Wright more than building a 36-point lead. The Wildcats were sluggish and played perhaps their worst game of the season - 20 turnovers - in a win last Saturday at St. John's. Wright gave the Wildcats a day off and just watched film, fully expecting seniors like Jenkins and Hart would instill the message that another letdown was not what has won them three straight Big East championships. 'I hope we're never going to have a night like that, and when we do I'm kind of surprised because we do take pride in that,' Wright said. Lesson learned. The Wildcats never gave ...

... we made,' Friars coach Ed Cooley said. 'The game was lost on the first five possessions of the second half.'. Jalen Brunson and Jenkins nailed consecutive 3 s from almost the same spot to extend it to 60-43 midway through the second half and the Wildcats led by 20 at one point. But Providence wouldn't go away. Lindsey hit three straight 3 s to cap a 13-2 run that got the Friars within 66-57 with 5:05 left. Then Villanova scored the next three baskets, including a nifty, driving layup by Brunson to put it away. 'They have a great defensive team, they're gritty and tough,' Cooley said. Hart hit a 3-pointer to start the scoring and Villanova never trailed. The Friars tied it at 12 midway through the first half before Villanova went on a 10-0 run capped by Bridges' 3-pointer. BIG PICTURE. Providence: G Kyron Cartwright scored 12 points before he left the game with a stomach bug in the second half. Isaiah Jackson also scored 12. The Friars are 2-14 all-time against the top-ranked team. They are 38-60 vs. Villanova. The teams meet ...

... a positive sign. Marquette’s struggling to defend teams when they shoot the ball, and one of the ways they can best combat that is by forcing turnovers. If Marquette’s not going to force turnovers at a meaningful rate, they’re going to have to do things like shoot 85% e FG% in a half to beat teams. That’s a bad plan. The weird part about the whole thing is that Marquette’s defensive pressure was almost non-existent in the second half when they were putting the clamps on the Wildcats in the shooting department. VU turned the ball over on just 9% of their possessions after halftime. That’s partly responsible for Villanova still managing 0.96 points per possession in the final 20 minutes since they very rarely came away from a possession without at least getting one shot up. On the offensive side of the court, it kind of looks like Marquette had a rough ...

... of his play.". Caleb Swanigan , Purdue Boilermakers. Swanigan scored a team-high 25 points - including a career-high three 3-pointers - and had a game-high 17 rebounds in Purdue's 84-73 win over Michigan State on Tuesday. Turnovers are about the only hole in his game. He had seven against the Spartans, which marked the fifth game this season in which he had five or more. Scout's take: "I'd just give the award to him based on what he's overcome. I take my hat off. His game has flourished on top of that. He shot a step-back, one-leg jumper [against Michigan State], and I was like, 'wow.' And he did it like, 'I know what I'm doing' too. He's a very intelligent kid too.". ... its game. That didn’t use to be the case. In both of these losses in 1980 and 1991, the Johnnies were ranked in the top 10 and considered one of the better programs in the country. From ‘75 to ‘95, St. John’s was a ranked team in 18 of 20 seasons, and in half of those seasons they were ranked in the Top 10. Since Jay Wright took over Villanova’s program in 2001, St. John’s has been ranked in 2 of 16 seasons, and haven’t been in the Top 10 once. The Big East would be a much better conference if the Red Storm could revert to the success they once had, and I think everyone would like to see that happen. Highlighted Game: 2013 vs Syracuse (W in OT, 75-71). This is my favorite regular season Villanova game I’ve ever attended. Some context is required. Today is my Birthday, and Jan. 26 th, 2013 was a Saturday game at the Wells Fargo Center, and the team I loved to hate the most was coming to town. The Wildcats were unranked and coming off a home win against #5 Louisville when #3 Syracuse came rolling in. ... calmed the Hoyas, and from there, they raised their defensive play. The team forced three steals and continued to dominate the glass against Villanova. Woodard added three blocks in the quarter, including two to end the half, to deny Villanova’s sophomore guard Adrianna Hahn the chance to take a lead into the locker room. An 8-1 Georgetown run at the end of the half took the teams into the locker room tied at 26. Hahn, who tormented the Hoyas earlier this month, finished the half with only three points, and a Villanova team that shot 47.7% from the field and 100% from the line in that game finished the first half shooting 26.7% from the field and 50% from the charity stripe. Georgetown only continued to stifle the Wildcats’ potent offense in the third quarter, forcing Villanova to earn six of its ten points in the quarter from the foul line. Most of these fouls, however, came from Georgetown’s desire to be aggressive on defense, recording another two steals and forcing a wayward pass through its pressure on the ball. On the other end, the effort Georgetown has exhibited all season found its way to the stat sheet through eight offensive rebounds in ...
