Catching Up With Adam Morrison As Gonzaga Prepares For Its First Final Four

... We thought we had a Final Four team that year, so that part stings. But I didn't let it rule, or ruin, my life. It was hard at first, just because of all the pushback I got for showing emotion, which I understand. I was one of the better players in the country at the time. But it's just funny, this year, you see everybody crying after those types of games—you saw Kentucky's guys do it, you saw it with Xavier, you saw it with Florida. It happens. It doesn't bother me that I showed emotion. The only thing that bothers me is the loss. SI: When you were in the NBA, was it something that you heard about from fellow players. Morrison: When I first got there, no [players] gave me guff, because a lot of them understood where it was coming from, right? They all played their last [college] game somewhere, and aside ...

... a black hole out there. Wears her heart on her sleeve. Never saw a shot she didn’t like. I couldn’t be more proud. (But her defense … could use some work.). Photo By James Snook/USA TODAY Sports. Regardless of what happens this weekend, they’re always going to be part of something bigger than just this team. Win or lose, they’re part of the Zags family forever. I’m excited to go down to Phoenix to watch the game with my parents this weekend. If you’re looking for me outside the stadium, I’ll be the tall guy with the ponytail who’s walking around with his head high — and his chest out — proudly sporting that Zags logo on my shirt. It’s going to be a big celebration. I’ve been thinking a lot about the individuals behind the scenes who have dedicated their lives to building up this program. They’ve put in as much work as anybody else, but never really gotten the credit or recognition they deserve. So I want to give a special shout-out to Coach Hertz, Mike Roth, Steve De Long, Travis Knight, Jennifer Nyland, Stephanie Galbraith, Zeke Brown, Bob Cross, the Mc Carthey family and ...

... only Kansas (28), Duke (22) and Michigan State (20). The Bulldogs reached the Elite Eight in 1999 and 2015, both times falling to eventual national champions, Duke and UConn. They didn’t leave anything to chance this time, hammering Xavier in the West Region final, booking that elusive trip to the sport’s biggest stage. Several Gonzaga greats will be at the game, players such as Adam Morrison, Jeremy Pargo, Matt Santangelo, Kelly Olynyk and Domantas Sabonis. They were all part of a gathering Thursday night of former Gonzaga players, coaches and friends of the program, a celebration of the Final Four achievement. It’s only fueling the Bulldogs’ fire to advance past South Carolina. “We’re very happy that we were able to be the first team to get to the Final Four, but we feel like a national championship banner deserves to be hung inside ‘The Kennel’ and we’re going ...

Hannah Hunsinger, Journal staff. The Utah Grizzlies' Michael Pelech passes the puck to a teammate during the game against the Rapid City Rush on Friday. A quiet offensive night and giving up second chance opportunities buried the Rush as the Utah Grizziles rolled to a 5-2 win Friday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The theme of the night was missed chances by the Rush as Rapid City ran into a hot Utah goaltender Kevin Boyle. “It could have easily been 5-2 our side,” Rush coach Mark De Santis said. “We just have to bear down on our chances. We hit posts, put pucks right into the guy. We had opportunities.”. It didn’t take long for Utah to jump on the Rush. After his shot bounced off the cross-bar Gabriel Verpaelst was able to grab ...

Gonzaga President Thayne Mcculloh Sees Bulldogs’ History, Success Tied To Community

... Gonzaga’s 2003 run in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They watched Adam Morrison lay on the court and cry after the Zags fell to UCLA in the 2006 Sweet 16 – Morrison’s last game in a Zags uniform. Then there was 2013, when the city of Spokane saw its own Dream Team fall in the round of 32 to Wichita State. Even in 2015, when the Zags found themselves in the regional final for only the second time in school history, the fans were cheering and feeling proud of their Zags. This year, the fans were right behind the Zags again, hoping for a chance to rewrite the history books. Mc Culloh said if the Zags finally take home the national championship, he hopes the community will feel just as part of that success as all of Gonzaga. “I hope Spokane celebrates because I hope that Spokane sees this very much as a recognition of what we – community, university and program – were able to do,” Mc Culloh said. But even if the Zags don’t bring home that national trophy, Mc Culloh knows his community will still stand behind them. “I think Spokane’s already proud,” Mc Culloh ...

... than many might think. In fact, only twice in the past 20 years have those three awards not gone to the same player. Last season, Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield won the Wooden and Naismith while Denzel Valentine, of Michigan State, won the AP honor. Before that, you had to go all the way back to 2003, when Texas’ T. J. Ford won the Wooden and Naismith awards and David West, of Xavier, won the AP honor. Other than that, from 1998 through 2017, it’s the been the same player winning all three awards 18 of the 20 times. While that bodes well for Mason’s chances of winning the Wooden Award on Friday — and, at this point, how could they not give it to him? — it also would make that accomplishment a little less rare than some may believe. Having said that, sweeping all 10 awards is another feat altogether. For one, Bleacher Report has not been giving out it’s award for 20 years. For two, some of those other outlets have gone against the grain a few times, with a ...

... instrumental. But the Tar Heels' focus on getting back to the final, and the way they warded off the pressure, never wavered. 1 Related. Zach Collins , a 7-foot freshman from Las Vegas who admitted he "could have gone anywhere in the West,' came off the bench after Karnowski took a Chris Silva face palm to his eyeball and finished with a career-first double-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks. Karnowski, the bearded behemoth from Poland, came back into the game in the second half and pulled Gonzaga out of a disaster. In less than four minutes, the Bulldogs gave back all of their 14-point lead and trailed 67-65. But a Collins 3-pointer followed by a pair of buckets from Karnowski restored the Bulldogs' lead, which they never relinquished. And finally with the game on the line, Killian Tillie , a freshman from France who played only the final 12 seconds of the second half, calmly stepped to the free throw line and sunk both to ice the biggest victory in Gonzaga history. "Of course I was [nervous],' Tillie said. "I was kind of nervous when I was on the free throw line. I just ...

He can guard one through five … Just to have somebody that versatile and you’re so comfortable with, you can switch ball screens and things like that, it makes a heck of a difference.”. Gonzaga needs to be firm early on defense against South Carolina and work to convince the Gamecocks their past two sizzling weekends were a fluke. 3. Oregon's shotmaking. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Oregon was shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range. That’s a top-60 number in that category. ... former Zag Jeff Condill. Although listing the similarities between then and now takes less time, it reveals one foundation of the program’s success: Bring in the right people and teach them simple truths. Work harder than anyone else. Prepare more than anyone else. Say thanks. Give back. Those simple truths are not exclusive to basketball – players carry them through life. A few weeks ago former Zags Matt Santangelo, David Pendergraft, Adam Morrison, Sam Dower, and Paul Verret once again donated their weekend to teach local kids at the Dan Fitzgerald Signature Basketball Camp. Former Zags donate their time and money to the Dan Fitzgerald Memorial Basketball Tournament where the high school teams volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission and Sacred Heart Childrens’ Hospital, fans annually donate over 1,000 pounds of food to Second Harvest, and over $100,000 has been donated to local charities. Now they are members of the Rapid City Rush. Their schoolwork isn’t finished — both have to complete their final semesters at Niagara University while playing for the Rush — but the two are living out their dream of playing professional hockey. “It’s not every day you get to play professional hockey," Sarcona said. "It’s a change of pace from playing four years of college, so it was exciting to get out there and experience something new.”. After Niagara lost in a playoff series to Canisius College on March 12, Sarcona and Muto had to pack up and catch a plane to Boise, Idaho. The Rush were playing the Steelheads on March 15 and needed reinforcements. “It was a quick turnaround,” Muto said. “We had literally two days to figure our stuff out. We hopped on a ...
