The Texas Rangers tried to get something going with their speed on the bases in the bottom of the first inning, and when that did not work, they broke out the bats in their second trip to the plate in the season opener against the Cleveland Indians at Globe Life Park. Down in a two-strike hole, second baseman Rougned Odor worked the count full before belting a pitch from Indians starter Corey Kluber, a finalist for the 2016 American League Cy Young Award, over the wall in right field for a solo home run and 1-0 lead. ... the plate or on the rubber. O. K. that may not be true. But it's always fun to jam along with Rangers as they try to get themselves hyped for an at-bat or psyched to take the mound. For Opening Day, a few of the Rangers gave us an inside peek at which songs will be blaring over the Globe Life Park PA system to introduce the ballplayers. Notably missing is Mike Napoli. Mayor Mike Rawlings said Sunday that he won't support legislation meant to save the failing Dallas Police and Fire Pension System. Rawlings is scheduled to testify about his opposition to the bill in Austin on Monday during a House Pensions Committee hearing. Is This The Beginning Of The End For Rangers'window Of Opportunity' To Win It All

... Opening Day Central: Predictions, previews, analysis, more. This time, though, things begin a little differently. There is no guarantee that this is just another year in a never-ending stretch of contention. There are a lot of impending free agents. The roster is older. The farm system is showing the wear of being leveraged year in and year out to fortify a contending roster. From afar it looks like this may be the last, best chance before the Rangers endure some kind of transition - a temporary closing of the proverbial "window of opportunity." It is a term that general manager Jon Daniels hates, and yes, hate is a strong word. And in this case, it might not be strong enough. "'Window' implies a defined period with a start and a stop," Daniels said. "But the reality is team-building isn't a snapshot, it's live action. Circumstances change, people mature, players improve and surprise, methods evolve. We've had offseasons where we didn't have a lot of heavy lifting to do, and others where we were challenged to be more creative. That's all ...

The Astros, The Rangers, And Post-hype Prospects

... how the game works. It’s why we’re so obsessed with learning as much as we can about J. D. Davis and Connor Sadzeck just as we fantasize over the potential of Jorge Alfaro and Josh Hader. For Houston, the hits have made the misses a far smaller issue than it’s become for Texas. Though the Rangers have had all-star returns from Elvis Andrus, Rougned Odor and Nomar Mazara, there have been far more empty nets cast in Arlington than in South Texas. Neftali Feliz notoriously broke down and the attempt to convert him to a starting pitcher failed miserably. As it did with Alexi Ogando, Tanner Scheppers and Robbie Ross, Jr. First round picks have failed the Rangers, as well. The enigmatic Dillon Tate was jettisoned at last year’s trade deadline for Carlos Beltran. After Scheppers the following picks were Jake Skole, Kellin Deglan and Luke Jackson. Chi Chi Gonzalez hasn’t gotten anybody out since 2015. The draft is only half of the equation to a farm system. The other is international scouting and the Rangers do it better than anyone.
