If Rule Changes Like The International Tiebreaker Make Mlb More Exciting, They Can't Be Wrong

... feed off the passion displayed by the players and managers, particularly from the animated Latin and Caribbean teams. (MLB made a mistake when it enacted rules that essentially ended the longstanding tradition of managers storming the field to argue with umpires.). If baseball can create more opportunities for emotions to be showcased without altering the fundamental nature of the game — say, by setting up a potential walk-off in the 11 th inning — it should. In interviews, several baseball people raised the importance of statistics in the sport and how the international tiebreaker would alter them. Like the integrity of statistics hasn’t already been compromised by steroids? It’s the reason Barry Bonds’ career home run record isn’t nearly as revered as Hank Aaron’s mark was. The Steroid Era placed a stain on the game. Engaging a rule that invites more excitement is the kind of change MLB should embrace. Caption Lakers honor Shaquille ...

Ranking Every Team's 2017 Giveaways From 1 To 30

... anything that should anger anyone. In that vein, I’m partial to certain things, such as bobbleheads. However, just a run-of-the-mill player bobblehead isn’t going to cut it. We need creativity. Speaking of which, creativity with any item is a good way to make the list. Some teams are outstanding about this, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers , Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners. Frankly, some other teams are pretty boring, such as the San Diego Padres , Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles. The rankings below are just of the individual items, not the teams’ promotional calendar as a whole (the Dodgers would be No. 1 in the latter case). I should also point out that each of the 30 items on here are great and that a lower rankings doesn’t mean that something is bad. So, again, I went through each team’s promotional calendar, picked what I thought is the best giveaway and ranked those 30. Let’s roll. 30. Padres. Aug. 19, Hall of Fame giveaway. We don’t even know what the giveaway is, but this is an incredibly weak promotional calendar. Even the jersey giveaways are just Padres jerseys and not individual players. 29. ...

2017 Mlb Season Opens With 3 Sunday Games

... opens with not one, but three games on Sunday. The day of divisional matchups culminates with the St. Louis Cardinals hosting the defending champion Chicago Cubs , their fiercest rival. All three games on Sunday will be televised by the ESPN family of networks, with online streaming available through Watch ESPN. The Cubs are coming off a juggernaut 103-win season that saw them win the World Series for the first time since 1908. Chicago has 200 wins in two years under skipper Joe Maddon, and with their array of young hitting talent and veteran pitching, the Cubs are arguably the best team in baseball again for 2017. St. Louis was a 100-win team as recently as 2015, though at 86-76 last year, the Cards finished just a game out of a wild-card spot, snapping a string of five straight playoff appearances and three straight National League Central division titles. The first game on Sunday features the Tampa Bay Rays hosting the New York Yankees. The 1 p.m. ET game is technically the first MLB game of the regular season. That game gives us our first 2017 look at Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez , who finished ...

... general manager. Injuries have struck two major pitchers on Dave Dombrowski's Red Sox. Think he's worried, or planning his next move. Michael Ivins/Getty Images. Senior baseball analyst for ESPN Insider. Former GM of the Reds and Nationals. Author of "The GM's Office" blog. In my 15 years as a general manager, I was always asked going into a season what my No. 1 concern was. To answer, I almost always went to talking about my concerns about our players’ health or the state of the team’s starting rotation. So when I turned the tables and communicated with all 30 major league teams and got every general manager to comment on what they felt were their No. 1 concerns, I expected many of their answers. But going beyond those concerns and leaning on conversations and evaluations from my spring training tour, we can also get into each team’s biggest short- and long-term concerns to keep this question framed in the way that general managers see it. American League. Dan Duquette’s opinion: “Starting pitching.”. Short-term concern: Starting pitching. Long-term concern: Extending the contract of Manny Machado. The Orioles’ chances of ...

... a deep, public mourning. Only 24, Fernandez was one of the game’s brightest and youngest talents, who carved through opposing lineups with a flame-trailing fastball and an easily forgiven delight. My first reaction to the news Fernandez had died was embarrassingly trivial and self-absorbed: Wait a minute. Who’s going to win the Cy Young in 2018. That is what was taking place in my career in MLB The Show 16 on my Play Station 4, where Fernandez was my pitching nemesis. He perched on every major accolade from the moment my created player entered the league, even winning both the MVP and the Cy Young Award in a year in which he was traded to Arizona. No matter what my fat knuckleballer spun, no matter how many groundouts I could pull like a rabbit from a hat, the lithe Fernandez and his sleek pitching repertoire dazzled the game’s virtual voters and took home all the hardware. He was my rival — in the context of the video game, anyway, I ...

Best And Worst Case For Every Team

... but the pitching could be reason for concern. If Keuchel and Mc Cullers pitch more like No. 3 and No. 4 starters than No. 1 and No. 2, they never swing a trade for another impact starter and the bullpen logs too many innings, the Astros could stumble. 3. Swing factors: If the Astros fumble a soft portion of the schedule in June - with a series against the Rangers in the middle - Texas might once again build an insurmountable midsummer lead. But more than anything, Keuchel's 2017 will decide whether the Astros are leading the AL West or chasing this season. The 2015 Cy Young winner saw his ERA rise over two runs per game in 2016 and his record decline from 20-8 to 9-12. If you don't like wins, his WAR fell from 7.2 to 0.5. The Astros missed the playoffs by five wins - the difference between a good Keuchel and bad Keuchel. World Series odds: 10-1 | Betting guide. 1. Best ...

As you’ll see later, the Rays did this better. 13. White Sox: #Sox Gameday. What’s the hashtag when they have a day off. 12. Rockies: #Rockies Everyday. That’s too much of a commitment. How about #Rockies Most Days. 11. Tigers: #Whos Your Tiger. I was going to rank this lower because I thought it was a lame twist on “Who’s Your Daddy?” which would have been weird, but it’s apparently a thing Tigers fans say. It’s still kind of weird. Let’s just move on. 10. Orioles: #Birdland. I don’t want to go to a place called Birdland. 9. Yankees: #Bronx Bombers Are Back. Kind of pretentious, but I still like it. 7. Indians: #Rally Together. Remember when the Cubs “rallied together” from a 3-1 World Series deficit? OK, that was mean. 6. Angels: #The Halo Way. If it’s good enough for Mike Trout, who am I to complain. 5.
