Fake News ? Without Courageous Media Civil Rights Progress Would Have Been Delayed

... the return of the teenager’s body to Chicago, captured his mother’s anguish in her poignant articles: "Oh, God, Oh God, my only boy," Mrs. Mamie (Till) Bradley wailed as five men lifted a soiled paper-wrapped bundle from a brown, wooden mid-Victorian box at the Illinois Central Station in Chicago Friday and put it into a waiting hearse. The bundle was the bruised and bullet-ridden body of little 14-year-old Emmett L. Till of Chicago, who had been lynched down in Money, Mississippi. For many in the north, the brutality of the Jim Crow-era south was an abstract and distant concept. Reporters like Mamie Colin made it horrifyingly real. And no one dared demean it by calling it “fake news” even in era of intense racial hostilities. Friction between the White House and the journalists tasked with holding officials to account is part of a healthy democracy.  But recent concerted efforts to delegitimize the news media are destructive and demoralizing. Among the low points of the recent presidential campaign were the vicious attacks on individual reporters which were a regular part of some rallies. White House press conferences, which should be a source of lively ...

... himself, was not in Vietnam but helped make the arrangements for Saturday’s event. “We’ve come here to honor you as vets, as Vietnam vets,” he said at the introduction. The Vietnam War Commemorative Lapel Pin project is part of the national observances of the 50 th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Any U. S. veteran who served on active duty from Nov. 1, 1955-May 15, 1975, regardless of location, is eligible to receive one of the pins. Vietnam was a unique era for American military, a time when the public sentiment against the war itself spilled over to poor treatment of those who served when they returned home. “There’s still a lot of grief being beared out by veterans,” Sen. Zorn said. And there are about 7 million Vietnam-era veterans still alive. So although quite a few pins have been distributed, there’s still a long list to go. “I hope each and every one of them will receive a pin,” he said. There have been as many as 300 people at some community events. But if a local resident is too frail to attend a public presentation, a phone call to Sen. Zorn’s office can help get the steps started to present a pin one on one, even in a hospital room. ...

... wins at this year’s New York Yacht Club Race Week and Ft. Then there are the currents and wind shifts…it’s a good challenge. And Ida Lewis Yacht Club puts on a wonderful (Saturday night) party for the awards.”. Benjamin is sure to find stiff competition in Stephen Murray (New Orleans, Louisiana), who is returning to the race after a several-year hiatus with the Carkeek 40 Decision, which he has owned since 2012. Max Nickbarg, navigator on Miracle, was a first-time Ida Lewis competitor as were his mates who were sailing alumni from Brown, College of Charleston, Columbia, Denver University, Roger Williams, University of Rhode Island and Yale. “We had a few challenging times,” he said, describing how they snagged an anchor line sailing through a fishing fleet and how, at the Montauk mark, his team had to put out its own anchor to stop from going backwards in the current. “All the boats were stacked up there, and we were there for about three hours and couldn’t tack around it,” said Nickbarg. ... the glass, as she broke her own school record with 25 rebounds Tuesday night to go with 19 points to help the Lenawee County Athletic Association champion Royals defeat Cascades Conference champion Grass Lake in overtime, 60-54. Henning’s previous mark was 24 rebounds, and Blissfield (18-2) coach Ryan Gilbert believes her 20-plus rebound nights would be more common if the Royals weren’t so used to blowing out teams. “If she played the whole games, she’d get 20 all the time,” he said. “She was outstanding tonight.”. Blissfield’s Kelsey Wyman scored a game-high 25 points to go with six assists and two steals. It was Wyman’s clutch shooting down the stretch that helped the Royals clinch the victory. “They hit a 3-pointer to tie the game (in regulation, 50-50) with under 12 seconds left,” Gilbert said. “They got the ball back after a charge and went down the court and made a layup, but time expired so it didn’t ...
