Will Oscars Spread The Wealth, Or Could 'moonlight' & 'manchester By The Sea' Be Shut Out

... La Land’s” absolute dominance is throwing off the normal balance. “La La Land’s” two strongest competitors, “ Moonlight ” and “ Manchester by the Sea ,” are favorites in several categories, but could they both go home empty-handed? Below, let’s take a look at their strongest chances and consider whether they may get shut out. Best Supporting Actor. Mahershala Ali has been the frontrunner here since the beginning of awards season, sweeping through critics’ groups across the country. He has continued leading the pack through Oscar season with wins at the Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards, but had hiccups at the Golden Globes (Aaron Taylor-Johnson won for “Nocturnal Animals”) and more importantly at BAFTA ( Dev Patel won for “ Lion ”). Johnson isn’t nominated at the Oscars, but Patel is in consideration. He plays the lead character in “Lion,” though only for the second half of the movie, giving him lots of time to steal the spotlight, much like the borderline-lead Supporting Actress ...

... and parts of the floor—and De Jong knew immediately it was the perfect location for a short scene in which stoic apartment building handyman and main character Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is reprimanded by his boss for having a bad attitude. “You can’t recreate that,” says De Jong. “Well, you can, but it was so perfect, what this human had created.”. As a production designer, De Jong leads a film’s design team in creating the environment that actors step into to perform—taking a script and bringing it to life through sets, props and costumes. She came into the craft after her family moved to Virginia, where her parents still live, in her teens, and she met Schuyler Fisk. Their friendship led to an introduction to Jack Fisk, Schuyler’s dad and one of the film industry’s most sought-after production designers and art directors. De Jong thought she might pursue a life as a painter before Fisk brought her onto his team for Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood in 2005. She worked directly with Fisk for about 10 years on films like Anderson’s ...

... Harper in Angels in America and did the show for about several months while she was pregnant with my older brother. And so I grew up obsessed with film and filmmaking. IMDb was my first love, but I never considered that it would be a possibility for me to be an actor. I was an actor in my dad’s movie [Steve Carrell drama] Dan in Real Life, and I got cut from the movie. You were cut. I was cut. Your father cut you. My talking scene was cut, but I’m actually in the last scene of the movie, and I stare directly into the camera at one point. There was no reason for me to be in the movie to begin with though; I think he sort of put it in just to be nice to me. Yeah. And so when you would go on IMDb, what was your search like. Okay, this is actually like kind of sad. At the time, I memorized child actors' birthdays. I think it was actually just because I really wanted to be like ...

... their feelings — that light-swallowing emptiness that nothing can escape. I hasten to add the family tragedy that causes this emotional devastation, its objective correlative, is fully up to the job, but that only makes the emotion overdetermined and, to that extent, uninteresting. It’s great for the actors to show their stuff with, in other words, but not so great for the movie. Mr. Lonergan should have left himself some room to look at the characters from outside, even at the cost of what he must have seen as the cruelty of anything less than complete fellow-feeling or empathy with such desperately forlorn people. For as well-drawn as their emotional portraits are, they are basically all the film has to offer, and it has no idea what to do with them beyond putting them out there. There is almost no plot, and the characters are the same at the end of the film as they are at the beginning. All its energy goes into showing, through a series of flashbacks, how they got that way through the tragedy which has driven Mr. Affleck’s character from his home and rendered him incapable of any permanent ...

Manchester By The Sea’ Is A Heartrending Instant Classic

... By Amy Longsdorf, For Digital First Media. # Comments. For his first film since “Margaret,” Kenneth Lonergan writes and directs “Manchester By The Sea” (2016, Lionsgate, R, $20), the engrossing saga of a Boston janitor named Lee (Casey Affleck) who returns to his hometown following the death of his brother (Kyle Chandler) to help care for his teenage nephew (Lucas Hedges). Lee must come to terms not only with his fresh responsibilities but also with his ex-wife (Michelle Williams) and the guilt he feels for an unimaginable tragedy. Brought to life without a single false note, this instant classic earns every one of its laughs and tears. Movies don’t come any more haunting than “Manchester By The Sea.” It will wipe the floor with you. Extras: deleted scenes and featurettes. Also New To DVD. Manchester By The Sea’ Deserves To Rack Up Oscars
Manchester By The Sea’ Deserves To Rack Up Oscars

... race, the odds are still with Mahershala Ali, who delivers a performance of rare delicacy and complexity as a paternal drug dealer in Barry Jenkins’ eight-times nominated, coming-of-age indie film “Moonlight.” Dev Patel, recent winner of the BAFTA award, is said to be on the rise as the grown-up Indian child raised by adoptive Australian parents, who returns to his modest beginnings in India to find his birth family in the wonderful, six-times nominated “Lion.” But Ali has my vote, and I believe he will win. In the supporting actress race, we may have a bit, not of voter fraud, but of category fraud. Viola Davis, the presumed winner, is arguably the female lead in “Fences” and should have been nominated in the best actress category. Thrice-nominated Davis’ wonderful performance is equal parts fire and water and tremendously impressive. But I would give the prize to four-time nominee Michelle Williams, who has one big scene in “Manchester by the Sea,” and slays it. In the directing race, the Academy could make history by naming Jenkins the first African-American to win an Academy Award ...

... accustomed to bending the law. [Special features: Featurettes]. From the archives. “3 Classic Films by Claude Chabrol: Betty / Torment (L’Enfer) / The Swindle” (Cohen Blu-ray, $49.99). Late French director Claude Chabrol made a wide variety of films during his 50-year career, but he’ll always be best known for his thrillers, which display a frank sexuality, a mordant wit and a sophisticated approach to tales of murder and deceit. Cohen’s “Classics of French Cinema” imprint collects three of the more delightfully nasty late-period Chabrols onto a two-disc Blu-ray set, containing “Betty” (about two women with similar weaknesses, who first support then betray each other), “Torment (L’Enfer)” (an adaptation of an infamous unfinished Henri-Georges Clouzot project, about a wealthy hotelier driven mad by romantic jealousy) and “The Swindle” (with Chabrol favorite Isabelle Huppert as a small-time con artist who takes more chances than her partner would prefer). Though different in their tones, each of ...
