... place, he’s an extra sitting right next to me at the next table. “Each piece he gave me really helped with the character. We talked about his state of mind when he ran into that gas station, which is a pivotal scene. People wonder how he had the presence of mind in that moment but he’s a genius and his adrenaline was going. He had this mindset of ‘I’m safe, don’t worry, but you gotta catch them.’. “That’s my only scene with Mark and it was the first day I had ever met him. Mark is taking down the information and he’s just so focused and intense and draws you into the moment with him. “I was so happy Danny and his fiancée came out for the AFI Fest premiere in Los Angeles. It was a great moment to have all of them there, people like [Boston Police Commissioner] Ed Davis and Sgt. Jeffrey Pugliese. It was the first time I’d seen the movie and they brought them all out and Pete gave them a great shout out. He doesn’t like all this attention. ...

... is wearing a uniform and greeting VIPs at the finish line of the marathon. Berg introduces us to several of the surviving victims before their lives were turned upside down. We also meet the Tsarnaev brothers, the terrorists who planted the two bombs on Patriot’s Day 2013 and who would later shoot and kill an MIT police officer. Berg turns a shot of lovers’ intertwined legs into a subtle harbinger of doom, focusing on the minutiae of life to establish a beauty and humanity in the mundane. Kevin Bacon is perfectly cast as Special Agent Richard Des Lauriers, the FBI agent in charge of the investigation, and John Goodman is a force of nature as Police Commissioner Ed Davis. For good measure, we get Oscar-winner J. K. Simmons as the down-to-earth, cigarette-smoking Watertown ...

"Jeff became an absolutely invaluable ...

... he says. “We wanted it to feel like it was lived-in to the maximum.”. To cement the film’s realism, the designer used an actual working bank and its tellers in Post, Texas, for a shootout scene. And for the climactic sequence set on a ridge, Duffield and location manager Jonathan Slator hiked for weeks to find the exact spot. “It had to come right off a road so the truck could drive up the embankment, and it needed to have a higher elevation on one side so he could shoot down from it,” notes Duffield. “Ben was great — he got the truck further up the hill than the stunt guys.”.
