... chance to speak to the outgoing President as he made his final address from the White House briefing room on Wednesday (January 18), with Obama marking the end of his presidency with a farewell speech. Billed as a time for reflection, the President cut a stoic figure as he approached the podium, but his demeanour soon gave way to a softer, more upbeat pose as the session got under way. He discussed some of the final acts of his presidency in recent weeks, including his decision to commute the sentence of Chelsea Manning - the woman behind the leaking of top-secret security documents to Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange. Obama noted that Manning had served a "tough sentence" and that the decision reflects the fact that the outgoing President believes her debt to society has now been repaid. Barack Hussein Obama, the 44 th and first Black President of the United States has been called many things.  He is considered an adept orator, a man of consummate grace and prodigious intellect; the President who made healthcare coverage a reality for millions of Americans, as well as the President that said “the last person Osama bin Laden saw on earth was an American and hopefully, at that moment, he understood that the American people hadn’t forgotten the 3,000 people he killed”.  He moved an entire nation when he sang Amazing Grace and made us beam with pride as he extolled the beauty of Black love and fatherhood.  His comedic timing was flawless; he could roll with the best of them.  He is unflappable, cool and steady – a baller, full of ...

... and a programme of deregulation, will lift the economy and boost wages. Done well, tax reform would confer lasting benefits (see Free exchange ), as would a thoughtful and carefully designed programme of infrastructure investment and deregulation. But if such programmes are poorly executed, there is the risk of a sugar-rush as capital chases opportunities that do little to enhance the productive potential of the economy. That is not the only danger. If prices start to rise faster, pressure will mount on the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates. The dollar will soar and countries that have amassed large dollar debts, many of them emerging markets, may well buckle. One way or another, any resulting instability will blow back into America. If the Trump administration reacts to widening trade deficits with extra tariffs and non-tariff barriers, then the instability will only be exacerbated. Should Mr Trump right from the start set out to engage foreign ...

... is dubious. While Bill Clinton insisted that his wife lost because Trump figured out “how to get angry, white men to vote for him,” the fact is that it was the Democratic leadership that secured the election for Trump. Despite long-standing polls showing that voters did not want an establishment figure , the establishment pre-selected Clinton, who is not only one of the most recognized establishment figures but someone carrying more luggage than Greyhound. She is also someone who had even higher negative polling on character and truthfulness  than Trump. Clinton pulled basically the same percentage of female votes as Obama did four years earlier. Indeed, Clinton actually did slightly worse this election than Obama did in the prior two presidential ...
