... producer Adele Romanski has premiered numerous projects at SXSW over the years. Brie Larson caught the critical eye in 2013’s “Short Term 12,” launching the career surge that propelled her to an Oscar-winning performance in “Room.”. “For me that is what it’s all about, anybody you think is interesting and talented you want wonderful things to happen for them,” said Pierson. “And the most fun part of our job is we get to act on our enthusiasm, we get to pursue that and cultivate that.”. As part of a larger event that also includes a music festival and interactive conference, the film festival was also among the earliest to spotlight television; this year will feature premieres of Justin Simien’s adaptation of his own “Dear White People,” the comedy-world-set “I’m Dying Up Here” and Neil Gaiman’s much-anticipated “American Gods.”. Documentary filmmakers Jeff Malmberg and Chris Shellen, who won the SXSW jury prize in 2010 with their film “Marwencol” (the same year Lena Dunham ’s “ Tiny Furniture” won the narrative prize), are back with their first new feature doc since, a look at changing life in an Italian village titled “Spettacolo.”. “That’s the thing I like ...

That’s five years before his breakout success with subversive British sitcom Spaced, when “Bellbottoms” by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion earwormed its way into his skull. The 19-year-old Wright kept it on constant repeat, “and I kept visualizing this car chase, and thinking, ‘This would be a great car chase song.’” His 2002 heist-themed music video for Mint Royale’s “Blue Song” was arguably a proof-of-concept, so much so that when it screened as part of a 2010 Q&A with J. J. Abrams, “while we were watching it, [Abrams] leaned over and said, ‘I think this would make a great movie,’ and I said, ‘I’m way ahead of you.’”. In fact, he’d been working on the script since 2007, when he first pitched the idea to Eric Fellner at Working Title Films. “I took the advance to write it then,” said Wright, “but didn’t deliver the script until 2011.”. That time was all about preparation, like fitting the right scene to the right song. ...

... beautiful in a white button-up shirt and black dress, while Elgort went for a wine purple suit with a grey button-up and matching tie. Wright, who's also directed films such as The World's End and Shaun of the Dead, wore a dark blue suit with a black collared shirt. Supporting players: Gonzalez and Elgort were dressed to the nines for the big event. Say cheese: Hamm flashed his Colgate smile while posing with movie's director Wright. ... of every scene for the next two hours. (The film was choreographed by Ryan Heffington , who is responsible for Sia and Maddie Ziegler’s viral “ Chandelier ” routine.) Elgort—a trained dancer —glides with cool movie-star grace through any sequence that requires him to dance, drum, or lip-sync along to his playlist. But Baby Driver suffers a bit from Wright’s historic preference for style over character. When an actor like Simon Pegg is at the center of a Wright film, his affable charm and mile-a-minute delivery gives audiences plenty to latch on and root for. (Even in The World’s End, where he plays the heel.) But for all his suave song-and-dance man delivery, Elgort isn’t quite endowed with the same charisma. And the withdrawn, laconic nature of Baby, a hero who lives inside his head and a musical world of his own, means that while Baby Driver is never boring, it struggles to ever leave a deeper impression.
