... Purim holiday. Contact Editor. Haredi man outside draft office. Flash 90. Dozens of haredi yeshiva students have been ordered to report for the draft this coming Sunday and Monday, says MK Yaakov Margi (Shas), coinciding exactly with the upcoming holiday of Purim. Margi, who chairs the Education, Culture, and Sports Committee in the Knesset, says his office has received dozens of requests over the past week from haredi yeshiva students who say they have received orders from the IDF requiring they appear at induction centers during the Purim holiday next week. A statement from the IDF justified the induction orders, saying that Purim is not a recognized holiday from work in Israel. The students requested that MK Margi intervene on their behalf to have the draft orders delayed until after the holiday. Draftees who fail to report as ordered on Purim could face prosecution, Margi’s office said. “If someone who receives the notice does not appear [as ordered], the army could take action against him, and in some cases he will be declared a draft-dodger.”. On Thursday, Margi penned a letter to the Defense Ministry, requesting ...
How About A Trip To Outer Space For Purim? Or Back To The Shetl
... Celebration of salvation. The holiday of Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people living in the fourth century from Haman’s plot to annihilate the entire Jewish nation. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah (or Scroll of Esther), sending food to friends (knows as “mishloach manot”), giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive meal. A time-honored Purim custom is to dress up and disguise oneself — an allusion to the fact that the miracle of Purim was disguised in natural garments. This is also the significance behind a traditional Purim food, the “hamantash” — a pastry whose filling is hidden within a three-cornered crust. How Hamantaschen Cookies Got Their Name
... clues can be found in its name. Early versions of the cookies were more commonly known as oznei Haman, meaning "Haman's ears." The late Jewish food historian Gil Marks' Encyclopedia of Jewish Food traces that phrase — but not the cookie — to the Roman scholar and poet Immanuel ben Solomon (c.1261-1328) who, thanks to "a misinterpretation arising from the medieval Italian custom of cutting off a criminal's ear before execution," argued that Haman's ears had been cut off after he was hanged, at the end of the Purim story. Marks traces the first record of oznei Haman as something to eat back to a 1550 satirical Hebrew play that was p roduced for a Purim carnival in Mantua, Italy, and "is the oldest extant Jewish play," drawing from both religious stories and Italian dramatic traditions. The script contains a play on words in which one character thinks that the Biblical story of the Israelites eating manna in the dessert is saying ...

What Is Purim 2017 Jewish Holiday Spiritual Meaning
... was written down in the Book of Esther, otherwise knows as the Megillah of Esther. Nowadays, observant Jews fast from sunrise to sunset the day before Purim to echo Esther's own fast. Purim proper is when congregants take part in a public Megillah reading (or two) and the partying starts. In celebration of the Jews' salvation in Persia, people drink, eat triangular cookies known as hamantaschen (which are meant to mimic the three-pronged hat Haman wore ), and generally make a ton of joyful noise. During the Megillah reading, whenever Haman's name is said, congregants interrupt the reader with boos, hisses, and ratchet-like noisemakers called graggers. Sometimes, congregants even put on comical renditions of the Purim story in performances known as "purim spiels" ("spiel" can mean "game" or "play" in Yiddish). Considering the holiday's overall vibe, it makes sense that it's often compared to Mardi Gras and Halloween, but its founding story makes it totally unique to Judaism. Esther's bravery continues to symbolize the enduring ...
