... again reflect humor and I knew we had formed a bond that would last forever. Good old St. Patrick’s Day…. St. Patrick’s Day is a day when it’s fun for everyone to be Irish –whether that countries blood flows through your veins or not — it’s fun to be Irish for a day. Fortunately, there is a cup or glass of something for everyone. For example…. How can one argue with a mixture of Irish whiskey and cream? Originally, Baileys Irish Cream was a liqueur made for the more mature sophisticated lady drinker but it’s now enjoyed by everyone. Can’t beat that creamy taste. Of course, we can’t forget the iconic Guinness — the dry stout/porter that was first brewed in Dublin in 1759. It’s a legend around the world and even if this stout/porter isn’t your cup of tea, it worthy of a pint to honor its long history. A recent addition to the list of St. Paddy’s ...

Slainte's Irish Cuisine Is Worth Your Attention Year-round
Slainte's Irish Cuisine Is Worth Your Attention Year-round

... at Slainte. Mostly, though, I like being able to eat Irish dishes on a whim. Maybe it's because my middle name is O'Connor, and I'm drawn to the hearty food of my ancestors. But it's really because the food is well-prepared and quite good. Patrick Russell (no relation to the chef) and his wife, Katie, opened Slainte in 2004 in honor of their Irish descent and because "we love the concepts of Irish pubs," Patrick Russell said. (Wesley Case). On St. Patrick's Day, Slainte will be at the forefront of celebrations around the city. The restaurant will open earlier than usual (6 a.m.) and serve breakfast until noon. Do try the breakfast boxty with potato pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, rashers (slices of ham or bacon) and Irish cheddar cheese. After that, a traditional Irish menu will be available. For entertainment, the Teelin Irish Dance Company will perform at 5:30 p.m. Go ahead and wear green and head out to Slainte on St. Patrick's Day. But don't forget about the Irish pub the rest of the year, either. Scene & Décor The pub-style restaurant has dark wood, booths, tables and bars on two levels. Sláinte! Here's To Your Healthy Appetite

... Thursday or Saturday. Green beer is okay on Friday, but in moderation (which as we all know is not a problem for those of us with our roots in the “old sod”). In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, I found a couple of interesting Irish recipes for you to try. The first is likely to make the most unique nachos you’ll ever come across. The second recipe is for a crunchy cabbage casserole, which might make a nice alternative side dish, instead of boiled cabbage with your corned beef. Here’s a bit of Irish trivia: Sláinte! We’ve all heard this term many times, but what does it really mean? Good health! It is an ancient Irish expression derived “from the word slán, meaning safe.” According to __link__ , a reader survey determined that “sláinte is the most used Irish expression in America.” You raise your glass and salute each other’s good health before taking your first ...

Sláinte Cheers ! Kells Hosts First Irish Beer Festival

... if you're not Irish, everyone puts on a green shirt and comes out and has a great time.". Kells has been the epicenter of St. Patrick's Day festivities for decades — with a weekend-long festival featuring traditional food, Irish beer, live music, dancing and an annual black-tie "smoker," a boxing event that matches Golden Glove boxers from Ireland against the top U. S. amateur fighters. With St. Patrick's Day festivities next week, however, they will kick it up a notch, with a first-ever Irish Beer Festival. That means there will be plenty more to drink than the ubiquitous Guinness. "I had a bunch of brewer friends bugging me. 'Can I have my beer there?'" Mc Aleee says. There are only so many taps to fill. So this past fall, he decided to host an Irish Beer Fest, as a chance to showcase craft beer and ...

... favourite stout of Ireland.  (GRAHAM BARCLAY). There are strong stouts, there are sweet stouts, there are spice-laden stouts, and stouts which have some coffee. Here are some very good ones available on Ontario shelves. They’re suitable for toasting St. Patrick and for plenty of other occasions as well (contrary to what some people apparently believe, it’s entirely acceptable to sip stout on the other 364 days of the year). In addition to stout, Ireland also makes some very good whiskey. This rich, chocolatey brew has a touch of both. The underlying stout is produced by Scotland’s wood-aging specialists Innis and Gunn. They take that beer and age it in barrels which formerly held ...

You won't find green beer being served Friday during the Sláinte Fest at Five Threads Brewing Co. in Westlake Village, but you might be able to make your own. "I respect the beer too much to turn it green," head brewer Tim Kazules said with a laugh. "But I get it: Some people expect it. So we might have a couple of droppers of food coloring on the counter so they can add it themselves.". Now in its second year, the ticketed festival from 3:30-11 p.m. Friday isn't just a celebration of St. Patrick's Day and the return of the brewery's limited-edition Sláinte Irish Stout. It also marks the official unveiling of the expanded taproom, created by pushing into what used to be an Asian antiques and furnishings import business next door. ... Her style is fantastic, and she also knows a few steps. We’ve got Alyth Mc Cormack from a Scots-Gaelic community on the west coast of Scotland who does wonderful Puirt à beul, or Scottish mouth music. We’ve been playing a tune called “Foggy Dew” that commemorates the 100 th anniversary of the Easter Uprising, which started in 1916 and gained us our freedom. That really brings out the whole feeling of rebellion that took place at that time. We give our shows the full lashing out: Chieftains oldies, material from Santiago, which is dedicated to music from Galicia, a Celtic region in the west of Spain which we were awarded a medal from the king of Spain for. That’s a tremendous showstopper. That’s the long-lasting beauty of The Chieftains—you mix the modern and the traditional in a way that very few other musical acts anywhere in the world have. Why, thank you. We’ve also got a piece of music called “Planxty,” which means ‘good health to you’ and which comes from Michael Kelly, one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s best friends—he performed in the 1786 Vienna premier of The ...

Sláinte! The Irish And Their Horses
Sláinte! The Irish And Their Horses

... to carry people away on a wild ride. In 1992, the Pooka was the subject of Into The West, a wonderful feature film in which a mysterious white stallion carries two gypsy children on a journey of self-discovery that begins in Dublin and ends at the shore of the wild western sea. But Irish horses are much more than the stuff of legend. Like tourism and whiskey, bloodstock breeding is one of Ireland’s most important industries. This vital economic resource centers on three breeds: the Connemara pony, the Irish draught, and the thoroughbred. The Connemara is the oldest pure Irish breed. Small native ponies called “breakers” were crossed with two imports, Welsh mountain ponies, which arrived with traders in the seventh century A. D., and Spanish Andalusians brought in a thousand years later. The Connemara’s size and sure-footed agility made them ideally suited for harvesting and hauling turf from the bogs of west Galway. ... in 1978 and moved to Denver. Tim and Kathy Turley at Eske Castle in Donnegal, Ireland. He had the right mixture of compassion and toughness that a juvenile-probation officer needs to be successful. Within 20 years, he would be Chief Probation Officer Turley [in the Denver Juvenile Probation Department]. Retiring after 32 years with just a few calluses and a mild case of cynicism, Tim had enough left in his tank so that when Denver Public Schools rang the bell for someone to manage a federal grant, Tim answered. He then went on to develop the Restorative Practice concept to reduce out-of-school suspensions and expulsions. Kathleen Margaret (O’Ceallaigh) Kelley and Tim (Mac Toridhealbhaigh) Turley were married in 1972. From that union came three children—Sean, Mary Kathryn and Bridgette [and three grandchildren].
