We're Usually Listening To Disco While Her Daughter Plays In Her Lap

... Wednesday night’s N. Y. C. premiere was no exception. Makeup artist Frankie Boyd created Johansson’s glowy, fresh look for evening, which was actually inspired by throwback red carpet look the actress sported in 2015. Frederick M. Brown/Getty. “I had seen a photo of Scarlett from when she attended a Tom Ford party in L. A. The image always stuck in my mind because she had a gorgeous tan and a gold dress on,” Boyd told People Style. “I wanted to do something similar, but with a smoky taupe eye to make them pop.”. Boyd also says he took her shaved short cut into consideration for the look. “Since she cut her hair short I ditched doing contour on her and opted for a shimmery peach blush to show off her gorgeous complexion,” he said. “[I like to] illuminate the skin instead of using contour.”. Hollywood's Mischievous Vision Of Ai
Hollywood's Mischievous Vision Of Ai

... many reasons. It was refreshing to see an AI movie that was not about violent robots and raised many interesting AI issues in the broader public sphere—such as scalability (dating at massive scale), the realistic and sad aspect of human loneliness being filled by machines (already happening in China via chatbots) and the issues that arise as AI surpasses human intelligence. I also liked Blade Runner, a fun action movie that addressed the question of what it means to be human versus machine, and how one could tell, even about oneself. Oren Etzioni , chief executive officer of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. That is the hardest question you’ve asked me today because, for example, Ex Machina is fun in terms of discussing issues around the Turing test [in which a machine tries to convince an interrogator that it is human]. There are a lot of movies that I’ve enjoyed, but if you ask me what movie has done a good job depicting AI, I’m still waiting for ...

A Comprehensive Guide To The Ghost In The Shell Controversy

... stands by his casting of Johansson, who he calls “the best actress of my generation and her generation, and the person I felt most embodied the physicality and the ability to inhabit that role.” The director of the first Ghost in the Shell movie, Mamoru Oshii, agreed but for different reasons, telling IGN : "The Major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one. The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her.". Johansson has also responded to questions about the controversy in recent interviews. In February, she told Marie Claire , “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.” This week, she appeared on Good Morning America ...

Ghost In The Shell Looks Great, But Rings Hollow
Ghost In The Shell Looks Great, But Rings Hollow

... funny guy. So The Boss Baby , which puts Baldwin’s voice inside its pint-sized protagonist, should be a safe bet, right? Unfortunately, as we’ve seen all too often in this space, what looks great on paper can be a painful ordeal on the screen, and critics say this movie — inspired by Marla Frazee’s board book of the same name — offers yet another example. The premise, just fine for a short story, suffers from being stretched to feature length, and screenwriter Michael Mc Cullers fills the gap with all the scatological humor one might fear from a 3 D animated movie about a baby with a briefcase. The youngsters in your life will probably want to see it — and they might very well laugh themselves silly — but the reviews point to a nominally kid-friendly film with little to offer older chaperones. What’s New on TV. Imaginary Mary ‘s appealing cast is canceled out by uninspired material and a ridiculous premise whose deficiencies are compounded by an unfunny, ill-advised CGI creature. Is Scarlett Johansson's Casting In Ghost In The Shell Whitewashing

... prime example. Ghost In The Shell is quintessentially a Japanese film. Set in the fictional Japanese city of Niihama, aka New Port City, it was made by Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Oshii, with Japanese characters, in a distinct Japanese setting, created with traditionally Japanese animation techniques. Its creator, Masamune Shirow, was born in Kobe, Japan. However, here, the fictional, futuristic city the story is set in is devoid of Asian inspiration. Johansson is not Japanese (Picture: Getty). Instead, we’re presented with an impressive, Blade Runner-style cityscape that’s full of neon lights, holographic advertising, and towering structures with an architectural bent that goes up rather than out. What we see after these elements are put into place is a multicultural mix funnelling into a nondescript city that not only resembles classic sci-fi flicks with its aesthetic, but hones in on an idea of blending cultures over discernible identity. And it’s this visual splendour that contributes to duping us into overlooking its intent. ...

... look like real memes, but their captions – such as “when you get a new watch but you don’t have any friends to show it to” and “buy milk, call mom, wash car, new watch” – use the openly disingenuous tone of traditional advertising. It’s a difficult balance to strike – capitalising on the comforting, consolatory appeal of amusing memes without cancelling out the solace with cold consumerist demands. A meme by @gothshakira. Photograph: Instagram. Despite the corporate overtones, Gucci at least plumped for some cutting-edge meme-makers for its campaign. Another of its chosen collaborators was @gothshakira , part of a new breed of content creators whose memes are obscure enough to provide a genuine alternative to the mainstream. At present, most memes operate within the bounds of only a few different emotional universes. One is the self-indulgent state of arrested development (drinking too much, eating unhealthily, liking cute animals and drowning in social apathy ...

... stormed theaters in early February. Fox’s The Boss Baby , which premieres Friday at 3,774 sites, should adequately quench the thirst of audiences hungry for a family-friendly romp, but don’t expect numbers in line with recent animated hits like Sing ($269.8 million) or The Secret Life of Pets ($368.4 million). The Boss Baby will be in good shape if it crosses into $25-30 million territory. 3 – Ghost in the Shell – $30 million. Scarlett Johansson takes aim at the domestic chart this weekend with yet another high-profile actioner: Rupert Sanders’ live action adaptation of  Masamune Shirow’s manga series of the same name. While the film has been a prominent fixture in the press throughout the run-up to its release, the buzz hasn’t all been positive; accusations of “whitewashing” a Japanese franchise (Johansson’s character is based on a fictional cyborg created by the country’s law enforcement) have plagued ...

... refreshingly never becomes a love interest. Michael Pitt is chillingly effective as Kuze, who shares a fair deal in common with the Puppet Master from the original film. Of course the real star here is the futuristic city these characters inhabit. The filmmakers remarkably bring the anime to life with state of the art production design and CGI. The imagery here jumps off the screen and is nothing short of inspired. This is a faithful adaption, although a few new characters and subplots are added. Most significantly, we learn more about Major’s backstory, which admittedly would’ve been better left ambiguous. While there are some nice additions, they don’t necessarily improve anything. Honestly, they occasionally cause the story to drag where the original was tightly paced throughout. Despite everything here that works, it can’t really compete with the impact ...
