... ("Dharma & Greg") stars as a driven career woman who meets and falls and love with a divorced father of three — and feeling the pressure of having a personal life sparks the return of her childhood imaginary friend, a weird creature called Mary. Jenna Elfman Talks About Her Imaginary Childhood Friend In Charming New Series

... in her life. Acting with a character who wasn’t really there must have been similar to having an imaginary friend for Elfman. But reporters at a recent press conference for the show wondered if she actually did have a made-up pal as a kid. “I didn’t have one,” she offered, “but if I did, I think I would want it to be Tim Conway and Harvey Korman. I think that would be really awesome to have them as little imaginary friends, because you’d just be snort-laughing all the time.”. It may seem challenging to act with a character that isn’t there, but Elfman says some of the show’s filming techniques helped. “We had rehearsal with a stuffed, life-size puppet,” she said, “and we had an amazing puppeteer, so we would rehearse with her. And we had a comedic actress on set to do all the lines, so I felt like I had a comedic partner, because Rachel is in New York. And then we would film one take with the puppet, so that the animators had a reference for her in that live space. And then they would take her away and there would be nothing. … It was actually a really great ...

... relies on the help of her childhood imaginary friend when she starts getting to know her boyfriend's three grown-up kids. “Imaginary Mary” is a show about an adult woman with a fuzzy, CGI imaginary friend — which is to say, “ Imaginary Mary ,” right out of the gate, is a show that makes no sense. Children have imaginary friends; not adults with 401(k)s and mortgages. The contrast between Alice ( Jenna Elfman )’s sophisticated life as a public relations executive and her Pixar-esque, Furby-like security blanket, Mary (voiced by Rachel Dratch ) is foundational to “Imaginary Mary’s” premise, which seeks to illustrate how even the most poised adult can be swayed by their long-held fears and fantasies. But the purposeful asymmetry of the premise doesn’t resolve into unified storytelling, in either of the two episodes sent to critics. Instead, “Imaginary Mary” feels most often like a family sitcom that is haunted by its own flawed idea, ...

As for Elfman, who’s been married for 26 years to Bodhi Elfman, playing a single career woman is not a big stretch. “I don’t really care if some things are like me or not like me, because you always have to find — even if you’re playing something extremely far from you — you’re finding a piece of that within you, I think.
