How Growing Up Without A Mum Shaped Me
How Growing Up Without A Mum Shaped Me

... The challenges we faced growing up shaped my passion for equality and an urge to make a difference, no matter how big or small. I’m sure my friends would say that my love for intense, patterned and bold clothing (curtains and wallpaper as some friends say) came from my mum, who had a fashion boutique and did modelling in the 70 s. I understand the value of making the most of what you’ve got – be it harnessing relationships that really matter, taking on the opportunity to travel the world or being able to follow your passions while you still can. Me with Naomi and her daughter Sophia (Picture: Sareta Puri). I know that I wouldn’t be the woman that I am today if it wasn’t for all of these experiences. If I could write my mum a card this year, I would share what strong and passionate women my sister and I have become. I would thank her and my dad for passing on those traits, along with a healthy dose of stubbornness (you can’t have it all). I would tell her all about my energetic, hilarious, wee niece, who my sister will be taking to school in August. The very same school that my mum proudly took my sister to on ...

It's Mother's Day In Case You'd Forgotten

... on different dates around the world. In America, Mother's Day was established in 1914 - thanks to campaigns by the mums' groups which were established during the Civil War. Anna Jarvis, the leader of this movement, campaigned for a May date in memory of her own mum - who had died that month. President Wilson formalised the date, but Anna later became dissatisfied with the commercialisation around Mother's Day. She believed the original sentiment of love and family had been sacrificed for profit. "A printed card means nothing," she said, "except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.". Many other countries have since adopted America's date. It has since evolved into a day for kids to honour their mums - giving flowers and presents. What gifts should you give on Mother's Day. ... you’ll almost certainly go into negatives if you leave the yellow barcoded ‘reduced’ sticker on, though a slightly wilting bunch of garage carnations is arguably better than nothing. Unless, of course, she doesn’t like flowers, or you suspect she might secretly be grading your overall Mother’s Day effort for originality – in which case, flowers are way too obvious. So maybe don’t buy her flowers at all. Got it. The fancier the better. She doesn’t want a tray of those new ‘luxury’ Maltesers that mum bloggers have been paid to promote. She wants some kind of truffle where every bite costs you a tenner. Having said that, if she’s anything like me and has an embarrassingly unsophisticated palate, she’d probably favour a massive bag of Minstrels over a box of Harrods’ finest gold-flecked truffles any day. Though you should keep in mind that even if she’s said she doesn’t much care for extravagance, it might be a test to see if you think ...

Why Mothers Need Child-free Holidays
Why Mothers Need Child-free Holidays

... kids. “I always advise them to choose their hotel wisely, if they haven’t travelled alone before,” she told The Independent. “In a big hotel you can feel quite lonely, but stay in a smaller, more intimate property and you’re more likely to chat to your neighbour on the sunlounger or to someone over dinner, whereas you’d be more conspicuous at a big bar by yourself.”. If money’s no object, Pickard’s top tip for a kid-free holiday is a week at Enchantment Resort in Arizona’s Sedona. “There’s a to-die-for spa, local and organic food, and you stay in casitas to cocoon yourself away from the outside world – it’s total immersion,” she says. “When I went, there were eagles soaring in the sky, and coyotes walking up the road as I was driving up. It’s the perfect place to switch off.”. If your wallet won’t stretch to that, she suggests a “24-hour immersion” in a shorthaul destination like Dubrovnik or Provence. Again, she says, pick your hotel wisely – spend a little more on a good, intimate experience and you’ll feel twice as rested at the end of it.
