For Andrew Garfield, His 'hacksaw Ridge' Oscar Nomination Leaves Him 'deeply Reassured
... Where are you now. I’m in London rehearsing a play, “Angels in America,” at the National Theater on the South Bank in London. I just finished my first morning rehearsal and went to lunch at the canteen and my agent called me screaming. I kind of assumed it was a good scream. This is your first Oscar nomination. How does it feel. I’m still feeling it—I can’t describe it really. All actors, before they know they want to be actors, even people who aren’t actors, fantasize about winning an Oscar. The best thing that can happen is to have someone affected by the work you’re doing. I feel very deeply reassured that I’m on the trajectory that I’m supposed to be on. I’m doing what I’m supposed to be with my life at this point. If there was any doubt in my mind —and there’s always a lot — the academy members, whose opinion I value, seem to think I’m on the right track. Are you particularly happy that the film you were nominated for bears a pacifist message during a time of global turmoil. Absolutely. To be a vessel for a story that is urgent for the times we’re in, for me as an actor, is all I can wish for. I think the world is crying out for this ...

5 Amazing Things The Hero Of 'hacksaw Ridge' Did You'll Never Believe
... spandex-clad superheroes in Hollywood. As you might expect from a Gibson portrayal of World War II, “Hacksaw Ridge” is heavy on realism, delivering more gritty detail than some can handle of the Japanese assault on American soldiers as they crested the cliff. “I thought it was important to make it brutal and give the audience a modicum or taste of understanding of what it was like to be in a foxhole in that place,” Gibson told Collider. “So that they could better appreciate not only what our veterans have sacrificed and go through for our freedoms, but to juxtapose that against what Desmond Doss was…It was a landscape of death and this man reaffirms life in the midst of all that sort of state, like a flower growing in the wasteland.”. A tender and nuanced performance by British actor Andrew Garfield as Doss has earned Oscar buzz. ...
Vince Vaughn 'hacksaw Ridge
... hotel to discuss his career on The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast. Following a remarkable run of hit comedies in the early 2000 s — among them, 2003's Old School, 2004's Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Starsky & Hutch and 2005's Wedding Crashers — Vaughn had deliberately pivoted towards drama with the 2006 dramedy. "But I didn't follow through on it," the 46-year-old says with unmistakable regret. Instead, he lost his way for a decade, during which he was humbled by critical and commercial disappointments — see Fred Claus (2007), Four Christmases (2008), Couples Retreat (2009), The Dilemma (2011), Delivery Man (2013) and The Internship (2013), or better yet, don't. He has found his footing again, though, in Mel Gibson's 2016 war film Hacksaw Ridge, in which he plays a tough sergeant who oversees — and ultimately goes into battle alongside — a soldier who refuses to touch a gun, and ...

... and eight wins between them for work on such films as “Jurassic Park,” “Pearl Harbor,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Inception.” Effects were handled by Boyes and Frank Eulner. And a potential spoiler on the sound editing side — or who knows, maybe both categories — is “ Deepwater Horizon.” The film lived and died by its complex sound environment, and seven-time nominee Wylie Stateman (“Born on the Fourth of July,” “Lone Survivor”) did an impeccable job. Mike Prestwood Smith, Dror Mohar and David Wyman turned in mixing duties. Others in the sci-fi realm that could turn up include “Arrival,” “Passengers” and “Star Trek Beyond,” while complex soundtracks for films like “Jason Bourne” and “Captain America: Civil War” warrant a mention as well. Who can say what sort of ...
Andrew Garfield 'hacksaw Ridge' And 'silence
... his first parts on TV. While he was starring in Chatroom at the National Theatre, Stephen Daldry's assistant saw him, recommended him to Daldry, who came and saw him and recommended him to producer Scott Rudin for a project they were planning to do. This led to Garfield's first screen test, but not his first film; however the casting director who considered the actor for that film later recommended him for Robert Redford's Lions for Lambs, in which he was cast opposite Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep. That same year, Garfield played his first leading role in the 2007 British indie Boy A. He followed that with parts in the 2008 head-trip The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, opposite Heath Ledger, who died during the production ("I just looked up to him so much"); Mark Romanek's 2010 adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s ...
Why Does Director Mel Gibson See 'hacksaw Ridge' As A Love Story
... life to save others in WWII, "the greatest act of love there is," says director Mel Gibson, right, who tells Doss' story in "Hacksaw Ridge," starring Andrew Garfield. (Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times). Glenn Whipp. Producer Bill Mechanic tried to convince Mel Gibson to make “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2002, when Gibson was still at the height of his career, and again in 2010, four years after the Oscar-winning director and star had been all but exiled for anti-Semitic comments made during a drunk-driving arrest in Malibu. Gibson says something about the story of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery in combat as a medic during World War II, finally clicked for him when Mechanic reached out a third time in 2014. Gibson took a fresh look at Doss and saw a man who transcended the horrors of war, tending to both American and Japanese soldiers alike without regard for his own safety. He saw Doss as an example of “what we’re capable of in our venality, that we have a higher self.”. “What he did was the greatest act of love there is,” Gibson says. “That’s why I call this movie a love story, not a war story.”. ...
