... 522 days since Tiger Woods last played on the PGA Tour, but that all changed Thursday at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open as Woods went out with a four-over 76, saving a disastrous back nine with a birdie on 18. More Farmers. Friday Tee times. Torrey Pines has been good to Woods over the years, which makes it the perfect place for the 41-year-old to begin what is likely the last phase of an all-time career. Still, he probably wishes he had a number of shots back from Thursday. Instead, it's a man who shares his agent who leads at Torrey Pines with a few other big names on his heels. Here is how the top of the leaderboard looks along with how a few other stars performed at Torrey. 1. Justin Rose (7 under): Rose made two eagles on the easier North Course on Thursday. ... strategy. Hazeltine's impact on this rivalry was seismic. Shipnuck: There are few topics that bore me more. The only point of the captain's picks is for us to have something to second-guess. So I guess this is a good thing. Wood: It's all fun to talk about in the two-year run-up to every Ryder Cup, but in the end, the team will be the same except for one player interchanged for another. And no I'd never want to see more than four captain's picks. You have no idea how much it means to the players and caddies to make those teams, and doing something exceptional to earn your way on is about as thrilling as winning a tournament. But I would like to see the Ryder Cup steal a page out of the President's Cup and do matchup pairings rather than a blind draw. Bamberger: Golf is all about earning it, whatever it is. You earn it on a points system. Four is likely three picks too many, if not four. Passov: I'm siding with Alan here. Except to hype and over-hype the whole event in the lead-up, I don't think we should have Ryder Cup captain's picks at all. If you played your way into the top 12 over a two-year period, you've played your way onto the team, ...

Forget Tiger Woods' 76 In Return; Simply Being Out There Is A Win For Everyone
Forget Tiger Woods' 76 In Return; Simply Being Out There Is A Win For Everyone

... anyone saw him as anything more than honorary piece of the furniture, on the final hole and the playoff that followed. So there is time, despite a nine-year gap - at least partially defined by a scandal of his own making - since Woods' last major title. For Tiger and all of us longing to see him win at least one more. The issue is whether he can reclaim some of that mental toughness that once made him so historically formidable. The first step is returning, so Tiger's first round in La Jolla is worth celebrating. The next is kicking the rust off and honing his game. On the down side, Woods was awful off the tee. But he also scrambled well, his short game salvaging what could have been a nightmare round, and a final birdie to finish at 18 and the day gives him after nearly two years a strong golf note on which to ruminate before he gets back to it Friday. Vegas, too, has liked what it's seen. This past August, his odds to win the Masters in April were 60-1. They're now 20-1. Vegas gets it: Golf takes time, but the fact Tiger is back in the first place is a big, big ...

... Woods, a 14-time major winner, is returning after a long injury layoff and launches his 2017 campaign at Torrey Pines in California next week. Els, a four-time major winner himself, said the current crop of players had a lot to thank Woods for. "Certainly based on the US tour, we wouldn't be playing for the money we are playing for (now) if it wasn't for him," Els told reporters on the eve of the of the SMBC Singapore Open at the Sentosa Golf Club. "It can only be good if he plays well when he comes back because there's going to be more spectators around the world getting fired up about the game," he said. "Some of the youngsters are playing great golf, so it would be great to see if Tiger can get in the mix at some of these big events and create even more of a buzz," Els added. Golf has seen the emergence of exciting young talent such as Justin Thomas , 23, and Hideki Matsuyama , 24, during Woods' absence and they are challenging the ...

Unexpected Question About Tiger Woods At Presser Had Golf Execs Shifting In Their Seats

... who will be handing Tiger Woods his next major title. A lot of shaky laughter and shifty eyes. — Nick Menta (@Nick Menta GC) January 12, 2017. Woods, who hasn’t won a major title since 2008, may have returned to the circuit, but he’s far from top form. At the Hero World Challenge in December, his first tournament back since undergoing back surgery in 2015, Woods finished in 15 th place out of 18 competitors. Woods is expected to make his next appearance on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines in San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open later this month. Should he remain unhurt, Woods may continue on and his first major this season would be the Masters in April. Slumbers reminded the room of that on Thursday, after the “shaky laughter” died down, which means …. “I’ll have the first chance,” Payne told the crowd. “I’ll have the first chance.”. Yep, #stillawkward. Thankfully, Slumbers cut the tension. “You know, if I could just say, I think it’s wonderful to see Tiger back playing,” he said (via Golf Digest). “When he ...

One of the biggest takeaways from the most recent Ryder Cup was the enthusiasm Tiger Woods showed for his role as a vice captain. Fellow captains and players alike raved about the 14-time major champ's involvement during Team USA's 17-11 victory at Hazeltine, and it seemed evident Woods would return to a similar role in the near future. The announcement of that came sooner than expected when three days after the Ryder Cup ended, Steve Stricker named Woods as one of his three vice captains for the 2017 Presidents Cup. Although Stricker said he hopes Woods plays his way onto the team, we know Woods will be at Liberty National even if he doesn't. And like he was with Davis Love III leading up to the Ryder Cup , Woods isn't wasting anytime getting involved. On Wednesday, Stricker appeared on the "Fairways of Life with Matt Adams" program on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio to discuss his upcoming captaincy. When asked whether ...
