Amazon’s Big Bet On Theaters Paid Off In Oscar Noms For ‘manchester By The Sea
... By the Sea Trailer: Amazon’s First Oscar Bait. There’s one very obvious reason for streaming services to put their prestige movies in theaters: That’s the only way to qualify for an Oscar nomination. But Amazon took its commitment a step further, though, honoring traditional, months-long release windows before plopping its hits on the Internet. In doing so, Berney and Amazon staked out a distinctly different position from streaming-competitor Netflix. In 2015, Netflix released the critically acclaimed Beasts of No Nation in theaters, but simultaneously made it available to stream, making an already jittery group of theater owners and operators even more ill at ease. That tension became the dominant narrative around Beasts of No Nation. And, possibly as a result , the film ended up being 2016’s most notable Oscar snub. By positioning itself as a partner to theatrical gatekeepers, Amazon helped avoid the same fate. Risky Business. But releasing the movie in theaters didn’t guarantee its success. Sure, a Best ...
Manchester By The Sea
... hurdle. Expecting his guardianship of Patrick to be a panacea is unrealistic. But the recognition that Lee ends up only slightly better off then when we first meet him leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. He remains incapacitated by guilt and an eviscerating sense of loss. When he declares, "I can't beat it," you believe him. For now at least, redemption is not in the cards. This would be easier to accept, and the movie would be less wintry, if Lee took steps to improve his situation by, for instance, confronting his reliance on alcohol or by seeking counseling. There's something masochistic about how he continues to punish himself for making one, albeit grave, mistake. It means the healing process cannot begin. The movie's major aesthetic deficiency parallels this aspect of Lee's psychology. Rather than create an inspirational metamorphosis for Lee, and ...
Why Manchester By The Sea Won't Get One Oscar It Could Have Won
... told Vanity Fair in an interview. She also understands that voters “need to be aware” of the distinction between pre-existing music and new compositions, which can be tricky to detect while watching a film. Even so, she points out that the rules governing the original score category seem overly strict—especially when contrasted against other categories. In the supporting acting fields, for example, “you see [some] actors onscreen for a short amount of time, but their work has such a lasting profile on the film that their performances are acknowledged”—such as Michelle Williams, whose Manchester performance is in the Oscar conversation largely because of one particularly riveting scene. Barber can take some solace in the fact that this is not a new problem. The Revenant, Birdman, and even The Godfather were also rejected at the Oscars due to their use of preexisting music. “I’m in good company,” Barber says. And she is nonetheless proud of her work on the film. Barber felt an “immediate connection” to Manchester by the ...
Manchester By The Sea’ Stuns With Stellar Cast, Slice-of-life Moments
... and present struggles. Yet, things don’t happen in such a way that could be easily diagrammed on the Three-act structure diagram handed out to students on the first day of screenwriting class. Instead, the audience gets a collection of scenes – personal moments ranging from quirky to devastating – that come together to create story in one of its purest forms. A film of this nature needs stellar performances to live up to its own potential. Fortunately, the entire cast of “Manchester by the Sea” is near-flawless. Casey Affleck’s interpretation of the role of Lee Chandler is on another level of acting entirely, as he seamlessly assumes the character’s identity. Affleck expresses a full range of stormy emotions while only uttering a few words. The supporting cast is oozing with chemistry and individual talent, from Michelle Williams as Lee’s ex-wife Randi, to Lucas Hedges as his nephew Patrick and Kyle Chandler as Joe Chandler. Years of pain are expressed among the actors in mere glances, with the same pain dissolving in moments of witty, laugh-out-loud dialogue. The critical acclaim and award nominations for “Manchester by the Sea” are nearly unanimous, making for ...

Oscar Nominations Favor ‘la La Land,’ ‘manchester By The Sea,’ And Diversity
... upon “Guy and Madeline” — maybe the kid, now 32, has a point. “La La Land” led the pack with 14 Oscar nominations. And maybe there’s a larger point here — New England is a hothouse for more than just crime movies set in Southie that feature heinous violence and worse accents. Playwright-turned-filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan is a Manhattanite, but his film “Manchester by the Sea” — nominated for six Oscars, including best actor (Casey Affleck), supporting actor (Lucas Hedges), supporting actress (Michelle Williams), director, and picture — captures something wintry and essential in the New England soul. Affleck is considered a favorite to win, and while some moviegoers think there’s not enough going on in his performance (and others complain about controversial incidents in the actor’s past), his Lee Chandler, taciturn by nature and further traumatized by circumstance and guilt, is ...
