Detroit's activist community converged in downtown Detroit Monday afternoon for this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Freedom March that drew more than 150 people. According to a program for the march, the action was intended to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the Detroit riots, referred to in the program as the "Detroit rebellion," and the 50 th anniversary of King's historic Riverside Church address in New York City condemning the war in Vietnam. The 1967 Detroit riots broke out June 23, 1967 on 12 th Street in Detroit after a police raid at an alleged illegal bar known as a "blind pig." The riots lasted until June 27 and resulted in 43 deaths, 1,189 injuries and over 7,000 arrests. There was large-scale property damage, looting and arson. The riots are pegged as a turning point in the demographics of Detroit and one of the causes of "white flight," in which a large portion of Detroit's white population moved from the city to its suburbs.
