Historian Sheds Light On Virginia Holiday In The Wake Of Backlash
... by the nephew of one of the most famous generals of all time, Robert E. Lee. “He thought that it would be appropriate to set aside a day – Jan. 19 – which was Robert E. Lee’s birthday, to have every Virginian commemorate and celebrate Robert E. Lee’s legacy,” said Jonathan Noyalas, Director of Mc Cormick Civil War Institute, Shenandoah University. In 1904, Stonewall Jackson, whose birthday is Jan. 21, was added to the holiday. In 1984, things got a little complicated when the Virginia General Assembly combined Lee-Jackson Day with a holiday honoring Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. “I think some historians would say it was a very bizarre twist where the General Assembly added Martin Luther King, Jr. Day into it. So, that third Monday, you had Lee-Jackson-King, Jr. Day,” Noyalas said. In the wake of recent racially-motivated attacks, like the Charleston, SC, shootings, some people are calling for Virginia to get rid of the holiday completely, but Noyalas said many people see the generals as military geniuses, not beacons of racism. “Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are regarded as great military minds. ...

... in the first half courtesy of Saucedo, who latched on to a blocked shot attempt by Isaac Olivares to fire it home. Byron Nelson equalized in the second half and neither scored in extra time, setting up a penalty shootout. It was tied 4-4 after the first five rounds and neither team blinked in the sixth round. Finally, in round seven, junior Juan Rodriguez scored and Lee keeper Anthony Pirtle saved Byron Nelson’s tying attempt to give Lee a 6-5 shootout win. Converting their spot kicks for REL were Nathan Saucedo, Edgar Sanchez, Aldair Delgadillo, Rolando Aparicio and Gerardo Gomez. That put Lee into the evening’s final against Byron Nelson. The frigid temperatures prompted organizers to shorten the game’s halves to 35 minutes. Six minutes into the match and Lee was trailing when Byron Nelson earned a penalty kick and converted for a 1-0 lead. It took a little over five minutes for the Red Raiders to equalize. After earning a free kick, Sanchez lofted the ball into the box with the deflected clearance coming to Olivares, who took one touch before firing it home. A late corner kick gave ...

... right side of history,” and that concept keeps changing. As in a messy divorce, each side simplifies the story and adds details that are construed as justification of wrongdoing, and each side accuses the other side of denial. We are all talking past each other. Why is Robert E. Lee relevant today? Why should we study this man at all? There are many reasons. One theme running through the writings of biographer Emory M. Thomas is that Lee’s life was a constant tension between freedom and control — a tension that plays out in the lives of all of us every day. That tension can be felt in his most famous quote: “It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.”. Lee owned slaves. This is a hard reality. He consciously tried to do the right thing, not by the standards of our day, but in his own time and place. Lee was a distinguished military general, engineer and college president, with an interesting ...

... the Robert E. Lee and John Tyler basketball programs collide at the Lions Den on Friday night, the schools’ first district meetings on the hardwood in six years will have much more at stake than bragging rights. ... to play on what Germany deemed “a kind of mushy (grass) field” because of recent rainfall. Germany said the Red Raiders were continually losing their footing, but things improved in the second half. “The other half of the field was firmer and (with us attacking that end in the second half), we took advantage,” Germany said. “We were able to play a little better possession game.”. In the end it was brilliant strike by Edgar Sanchez that proved to be the game winner. A clearance by Jacksonville fell to Sanchez, who was just outside of the box. The senior settled and unleashed a 25-yard rocket into the back of the net. With 15 minutes remaining, Lee doubled its lead thanks to an unfortunate handball by Jacksonville in the box. An Indians player attempted to slide tackle REL’s Chris Escalante near the end line, but in so ...

Robert E. Lee H.s. Threat Rumors Fueled By Unverified Social Media Claims
... talk about things," said Joe Showker, who has an extensive resume — which includes teaching internet safety and digital ethics and working with Rep. Bob Goodlatte. "Before social media, we would whisper in people's ears. The problem is, we're all carrying this device in our hands that has the world at our fingertips.". Showker recommended people try to verify information from a trusted source before passing it along it to their friends. "Your first human inclination is 'Oh My God, I've got to share this.' That's probably the worst thing to do. You should do a little check on your own, if you can," said Showker. Showker said this can be done by contacting the entity involved: in this case, the school. Dr. Reviea said a student resource officer would be at R. E. Lee on Tuesday in an effort to maintain a safe and orderly environment. "We take the safety of our students, staff and schools seriously," said Dr. Reviea. "If students have information to share relative to Friday's incident or any other potential issue, we encourage them to speak with the Lee High School administration - as did several students on Friday.". Dr. Reviea said the school's counseling staff and ...
