Board To Hold Hearing Monday On School Closings
... Worton Elementary and Kent County Middle School would close. Middle schoolers would be moved to Kent County High School, which is at 58 percent capacity. On Feb. 14, the town council approved a resolution highlighting the important role Millington Elementary plays in the community and opposing plans to close it. “Now, therefore, the Town Council of Millington resolves to condemn any move by the School Board of Kent County to close Millington Elementary School, and requests that the School Board of Kent County consider the aforesaid consolidation plan, any variation of that plan, or any other plan that does not result in the closing of Millington Elementary School,” the resolution states. Couch’s report states that the high school building’s footprint is “not immediately conducive to housing and isolating a middle school population of 438 students.” The report states that about 30 dedicated middle school classrooms would be needed, while the second floor at the high school only has 12, including five science labs in full use by high school students. Closing the middle school also would not result in ...

A Systemic Targeting Of Predominantly African Neighborhoods In America
... to all these school closings that are happening specifically in predominant African areas across the country. Here are the list of undertones behind them. 1. Building More Private Prisons To Lock Up African Kids, Particularly African Boys – One of the biggest undertones behind many of these school closings in predominant African neighborhoods across the country is that parasitic capitalists have no incentive to even care about educating our kids because they only care about systemically criminalizing and harming them to funnel them into the private prison system so they can continue to make money off of them. 2. Gentrification – Another undertone behind the school closings is that parasitic capitalists deliberately wanna make certain areas of the city “white again” by spiking up the mortgage rates on our homes as well as using dirty tactics like foreclosure to force us out of our homes so they can tear them down and rebuild them the way they see fit. If they tried to do that in other areas where other groups of people live, it’ll be immediately shut down. 3. Deliberate Political Neglect Of Inner City Schools By Local Colonial Governments – ...

Congressional Dems To Snyder
... “While funding alone is not proven to be an answer for performance, it should be noted that Gov. Snyder has continually increased K-12 funding each year, and if his FY 18 recommendation is implemented by the Legislature, it will bring Michigan K-12 schools to an historic investment of $12.3 billion annually.”. State-specific funding for K-12 schools has risen each year since Snyder took office in 2011, but he did approve a per-pupil funding cut in his first budget, partially due to reduced federal funding. State allowances have increased each year since. The School Reform Office, which Snyder moved under his authority in 2015, has come under fire since announcing the potential closures last month. Parents, students and educators have questioned both the process and policy. State Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, has proposed repealing Michigan’s so-called “failing schools” law and is studying possible replacements. The Democratic Congressional delegation, in their ...

On School Closings, Snyder Administration Leaves Parents With More Questions Than Answers
... were sent out to parents. A majority of schools on the closure list are in Detroit. Last week, some members of the Detroit City Council and the city’s legislative delegation held a community meeting to try to clarify things for parents. Natasha Baker, head of the School Reform Office was not there, but Rich Baird, one of the governor’s senior advisors, was. Here’s what he said. "We have to think about closure in terms of closing out failure, not closing out schools. Not closing out buildings and not closing out effective educational offerings.". What does that say about the state's approach to closing schools. "Closing schools is never going to go down well with communities and with parents and with neighborhoods that those schools are in," Smith said. "So the state is trying to, in their mind, give sort of this ultimatum: 'Turn this around or else.' And this is where it gets to the 'or else'. it's like [the state] is trying to couch it to say, 'Don't think of this as a school closure, think of it as an opportunity.'".
