Under Christie, New Jersey no longer devotes any funds received from a landmark court settlement with tobacco companies, diverting millions to the bloated state government budget. Tobacco use kills thousands of New Jerseyans every year. By comparison, heroin and other opioids kill a little over a thousand, a tenth of tobacco fatalities. Opioid addiction is a scourge that must be addressed immediately and forcefully, but to devote no dollars to the fight against tobacco addiction is unconscionable. The Christie administration deserves condemnation for its profligacy.
