A Father Of Rock 'n' Roll, Chuck Berry Dies At 90
... died at his home in Missouri earlier today after first responders were unable to revive him. He was 90 years old. He was inarguably one of the most influential early rock musicians. To find out more about Chuck Berry's remarkable life and career, we're joined now by Peter Guralnick, the music journalist and author who's written extensively on early rock 'n' roll. Peter, tell me about Chuck Berry and for people, I guess, under 50 who aren't that familiar with his music, why such a big mark on the development of rock 'n' roll. PETER GURALNICK: I mean, he's a person of such inarguable brilliance. He's an American original in the sense that very few of his peers are because he wrote all of his songs. He sang them. He played them. But I should point out that he would argue with that whole concept of originality because Chuck Berry's thesis always was that you build on the past. He would cite people like T-Bone Walker. He would cite Louis Jordan and Louis Jordan's guitarist Carl Hogan as some of the sources of his inspiration. SUAREZ: I think if you prompted people, even younger people with "Roll Over Beethoven," ...

Berry started out filling in with Johnson's group, known as Sir John's Trio, in 1953, and Johnson eventually acknowledged Berry's talent, charisma and business acumen by allowing the group to evolve into the Chuck Berry Trio. At the suggestion of blues legend Muddy Waters, Berry auditioned for Chess Records, the white-owned Chicago label that put out scores of blues hits. The result was the rockabilly tune "Ida Red," which became a hit after it was retitled "Maybellene" and discovered by white audiences. When the record came out, Berry said he was stunned to see that pioneering rock 'n' roll disc jockey Alan Freed and another man he had never met, Russ Fratto, were listed as co-writers of "Maybellene." The shared credits deprived him of some royalty payments, but Berry dismissed it at the time as part of the "payola" system that determined which records got radio play in the 1950 s. He later regained all the rights to his compositions. ONLY ONE NO. 1 HIT. Rock ‘n’ Roll.” For the movie’s concerts, he confounded Richards by playing songs in different keys and tempos than they had been in rehearsal. Richards would recall turning to his fellow musicians and shrugging, “Wing it, boys.”. His career nearly ended decades earlier, when he was indicted for violating the Mann Act, which barred transportation of a minor across state lines for “immoral purposes.” An all-white jury found him guilty in 1960, but the charges were vacated after the judge made racist comments. A trial in 1961 led to his serving 1 1/2 years of a three-year term. Berry continued to record after getting out, and his legacy was duly honored by the Beatles and the Stones, but his hit-making days were essentially over. “Down ...
