South Carolina's Final Four Run Gives Hope To All Of Sec's Underperformers
South Carolina's Final Four Run Gives Hope To All Of Sec's Underperformers

... universe, why not Ole Miss or Alabama or Georgia or someone else. Anything seems possible after the Gamecocks’ magic at Madison Square Garden. Consider the progress in Columbia. One year ago, South Carolina lost to Georgia Tech in the NIT’s second round. Two years ago, the Gamecocks went 17-16 and missed the postseason altogether. Three years ago, they finished 14-20. In fact, before going 25-9 last season, South Carolina failed to win more than 17 games in each of the previous six campaigns. The Gamecocks did more than rise the past nine days. They rocketed to heights few outside their locker room thought possible, burning dreams held by Marquette, Duke, Baylor and Florida along the way. Sandstorm Nation has earned this zero-gravity feeling. South Carolina’s story represents the best of the NCAA Tournament. For as much attention is given to small-school Cinderellas and big blue-blood favorites, the event is a chance for all to catch fire. For all the predictions made and best guesses presented in the buildup before tip-off, these weeks are magical because a team like South Carolina can ride the momentum train to a destination few thought Martin’s group would ...

How South Carolina Basketball Became The Talk Of The Ncaa Tournament
How South Carolina Basketball Became The Talk Of The Ncaa Tournament

... equally unappealing Marquette, but with red-hot Duke waiting two days later, what did it matter? The program winning a game in the Big Dance for the first time in 43 years would be a nice first week story. By now you know that the Gamecocks did get that first tournament win since 1973. You know that they ripped Duke a couple of days later to score March’s maddest moment up to that point. You know that Sindarius Thornwell has gone from “the guy with the funny name who’s actually pretty good” to the player who has outshone all others for two weeks. And you now know that South Carolina is headed to the Final Four for the first time ever. Regardless of which team represents the East Region in Phoenix, the setup for the final weekend of the tournament is now set in stone. This is the bizarro Final Four, with one familiar face thrown ...

Gonzaga, South Carolina, Oregon Join Old Hand North Carolina In Ncaa Final Four
Gonzaga, South Carolina, Oregon Join Old Hand North Carolina In Ncaa Final Four

... never really had before Martin arrived. Before this season, South Carolina hadn't posted a win in the NCAA Tournament since 1973. "Personally, I didn't know where this program could go," Gamecocks sophomore P. J. Dozier said after his team's 77-70 win over Florida. "But I know that when Frank Martin stepped foot on campus, you just got this vibe that the ball was rolling.". It's been rolling at Gonzaga since Mark Few took over in 1999. Problem is, there was seemingly always a bigger team from a bigger conference standing in the way of that program — from a campus of 7,400 in Spokane, Washington — taking the final step. Last year, the Bulldogs lost a 3-point heartbreaker to Syracuse in the Sweet 16. Seeded second the year before, Gonzaga couldn't hang with No. 1 Duke and lost by 14 in the Elite Eight. Led by tenacious guards Nigel Williams-Goss and Josh Perkins and 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski, the Bulldogs broke through big time this year, beating Xavier 83-59 on Saturday night. "I've been there 28 years," Few said, counting his first nine seasons as an assistant. "My first year on staff we won four Division I games. And, I mean, this wasn't even ...

Who Is Chris Silva? The Backstory Of South Carolina's Dunking Big Man From Gabon
Who Is Chris Silva? The Backstory Of South Carolina's Dunking Big Man From Gabon

... Chris Silva is helping South Carolina make a deep run in the NCAA tournament this year. The Gamecocks locked down a spot in the Elite Eight on Friday, March 24, after a win over Baylor. You may be wondering who Silva is after South Carolina’s recent win and after he put up 17 points and 10 rebounds in a stunning upset over Duke. We’re here to help. let’s start with Silva’s journey to the U. S. Silva flew from Gabon, Africa, to New York to play basketball for Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey in 2012, as detailed in Jeremy Schneider’s fantastic __link__ feature story about Silva’s basketball beginnings. Per the story, Silva showed up and the first thing he said was, “Coach, I go to NBA,” even though he was 6-foot-9 and only 184 pounds, and he had never played organized basketball in his life. But Silva worked hard — making 1,000 shots per day and able to run a mile in under five minutes (I can hardly believe it either, but that’s what Schneider reported) — and he improved year by year until committing to South Carolina. Now, Silva is, as head ...

South Carolina High Schools Could Require Computer Coding Course For Graduation
South Carolina High Schools Could Require Computer Coding Course For Graduation

... Want a high school diploma? You might need to learn a little bit of Java Script. All South Carolina public schools could require computer-science training for graduation starting as soon as 2019. A bill advancing out of the state House of Representatives would create new standards for computer science education in grades 9-12, set up summer training for new teachers in the field and require that every high school in the state offer at least one computer science course. The state currently  requires  one credit of "computer science" for a high school diploma, but that credit can be for a keyboarding class — a far cry from the rigorous and standards-based courses that some state lawmakers say would give students a leg up as they enter an increasingly knowledge-based workforce. "At this rate, we'll be ahead of the curve," said Valerie Sessions, chair of the Computer Science Department at Charleston Southern University. She recently signed an open letter in support of the bill along with ...

... with 40 seconds left that made it 73-68. PJ Dozier added 17 points for the Gamecocks, Chris Silva had 13 and Kotsar 12. It all totaled to a Final Four trip for coach Frank Martin, he of the booming voice and terrifying faces. Justin Leon had 18 points for the Gators who managed a 40-33 halftime lead on 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range. But that was it. Florida was 0 for 14 from beyond the arc in the second half, a lot like the 0-for-17 effort the Gators had in their first meeting with South Carolina this season. South Carolina, which forced Florida into 16 turnovers, finished 23 for 31 from the free throw line, including a 9-for-10 effort from Thornwell. Below is __link__'s preview of the game. The 7 th seeded South Carolina Gamecocks (25-10) meet the 4 th seeded Florida Gators in the East Region final of the 2017 NCAA Tournament  on Sunday, March 25, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
