Miami Has The Experience Michigan State Basketball Coach Tom Izzo Wants

... When he’s had junior and seniors leading, but also scoring and rebounding and defending. They are words we haven’t heard this season. And if we’re looking for reasons MSU enters this tournament as a No. 9 seed, with little expectation of a run, this is the place to start. The truth is, when Izzo looks at Miami, he sees qualities he used to build his own program. Qualities he’s been searching for in his own group for most of the winter. The Hurricanes don’t win with three-point shooting or fluid offensive sets or transition basketball. They win with nasty, with defense. When Miami beat Duke in late February, the Blue Devils scored 50. When they beat North Carolina, the Tar Heels scored 62. It’s true that North Carolina blitzed Miami last week in the ACC tournament. It’s also true the Hurricanes have lost their last three games. They are, after all, a No. 8 seed. But they are capable of beating anyone, as those scores suggest. That worries Izzo and his staff. It should. He also knows what kind of coach Larranaga is. What sort of tactician he is. “The way they control the tempo, it’s gonna be interesting to see if we can still run and get some,” Izzo said. ...

... better in its first round game than KU, but of course opponent factors into that. Now Bill Self has to deal with a Tom Izzo team that turned Miami into putty. Behind the UK-Wichita State game, this will have the most interest of any this weekend. Josh Jackson vs. Miles Bridges is a lottery pick face-off that could be one highlight after another. Michigan State. After a horrendous showing in the first seven minutes of the game, Michigan State played what Tom Izzo estimated to be some of the best basketball he has seen from the Spartans in a couple years. A 20-2 run in the first half, fueled by Nick Ward and Miles Bridges, provided enough padding for Michigan State to not only avenge last season’s first round exit but set the stage for a contentious second round game against top-seeded Kansas with a Sweet 16 spot on the line. ... who rattled off an easy 17 points Friday night. "Unfortunately, there's a buzz saw in front of us, but we've had that all year," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said after the game. "Might as well do it one more time.". The Jackson-Michigan State angle is intriguing, but there's more to this than one player. Izzo improved to 47-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament on Friday night - 15-5 in the round of 64. He's been here before. And, in reality, his team - even with all the freshmen - has seen teams like Kansas this season. The Spartans played Arizona, Kentucky, Baylor, and Duke this year. They know what the big stage - against big-time opponents - is all about. "We played at Duke. We played Kentucky in Madison Square Garden. We played Arizona out in Hawaii," Izzo says. "I mean, we've been on big stages all year long. And I think it hurt us some in the travel and everything, and but you'll have to ...

Versatility Sets Apart Michigan State Basketball Signee Xavier Tillman

... East Grand Rapids showed Xavier Tillman's progression. The Grand Rapids Christian basketball star received a pass some 15 feet away from the rim. The 6-foot-8, 270-pound power forward could have made a move toward the basket and finished with an authoritative dunk. Instead, he opted for a quality jump shot. "I never shot jump shots," Tillman said last week. "But in that East Grand Rapids game, I had one jump shot that gave me confidence. As I caught it, I just felt, because I wasn't getting touches that game as much as I would have liked to because of their 2-3 zone, that I had to shoot it. "As soon as I touched the ball, I wanted to get that shot off.". Tillman's willingness to expand his game is among the things catching the attention of scouts. The four-star prospect, who signed with Michigan State in November , is rated as the ...
