"It's kind of like the Fourth of July, it's like it's like USA's independence except it's for Texas,” said fourth-grade student Zoe Kriskey. The students taught others about historic Texans by each dressing up as a historic figure, and creating a “wax museum” for fellow classmates, teachers and parents to learn. "Remember the Alamo,” cried fourth-grade student Ryan Paul as he was dressed in his Sam Houston costume. Paul, as Houston, said he’s been waiting for this day. ... 2017. For Texas history buffs, and most Texans, today is special. Senora Scott takes us back to the 1800 s for a brush up on our state’s road to freedom. If you're a Texan, chances are you know what march second is. It happened in 1836, but let's go back a bit. On February 23 rd, Santa Anna and his army of around 3 thousand troops attacked the Alamo. The battle lasted for days and on March 1 st the last Texan reinforcements from Gonzalez got through enemy lines to help the Texan troops in the Alamo. The total number of fighters at that time including those reinforcements 185. On March 2 nd, members of the revolutionary government of Texas formally declared Texas' independence from Mexico. Just a few days later on March 6 th, Santa Anna stormed the Alamo and defeated the Texans, leaving few survivors. But six weeks later, a large Texan army under the command of Sam Houston attacked Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto. They shouted "Remember the Alamo" during the attack, a phrase that's still popular with Texans today.
