... that pass through the multiplex each year, but The Boss Baby proves a refreshing exception. Based on the 36-page picture book by Marla Frazee and featuring the pitch-perfect voice of Alec Baldwin as a onesie suit-wearing, corporate-minded blessed arrival, this Dream Works Animation effort is a delightful blend of clever and tender that’s certain to tickle audiences of all ages and stages. Although the setup might have suggested otherwise, with the depiction of a newborn assembly line that resembled the schematic for last year’s Storks , the scenario breaks from convention with its introduction to seven-year-old Tim Templeton (voiced by Miles Bakshi): an only child with an overactive imagination who’s convinced that he and his parents ( Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow ) form an ideal family unit. But mom and dad have other ideas, and one day bring home a little brother for Tim — albeit one in full business attire who totes a briefcase and speaks (when the adults aren’t within earshot) with Mr. ...

... visual textures that Brad Bird brought off in “Ratatouille.” There are irresistible bits, like the opening Baby Corp. delivery sequence, or Boss Baby’s James Brown funk waddle out of his taxi, or a baby action sequence set to the theme from “S. W. A. T.,” or the moment leading up to the climactic sequence in Las Vegas that features a bunch of Elvis impersonators whose Fat Elvis patter is so slurry-cool it practically leaves words behind. Yet there’s a reason “The Boss Baby” still feels standard issue and a wee bit tiresome. It has one of those relentless mechanical plot lines that’s all booby-trapped logistics — in this case, about how Boss Baby is on a mission from Baby Corp. to stave off an epidemic of puppy love. It seems the growing obsession with cute new dog breeds is draining away the love for babies, and at the Vegas Convention Center, it’s up to Boss Baby to gather intel on a new pooch about to be launched: a creature called the Forever Puppy whose endless adorability represents the ultimate threat. This is the definition of a clanking cartoon narrative that doesn’t matter ...

... sees a strong connection: “Where my book and their story intersect is interesting to me. There’s a definite affinity between my baby and the character in the film.”. Not only is Frazee’s character starring on the screen, but in new book formats as well. Simon Spotlight has released several movie tie-in editions aimed at readers of different age ranges: two board books, a Boss Baby junior novelization, and a leveled reader. Additionally, a burst labeling the book as the inspiration for the film has been added to the original picture book’s paperback edition. For Frazee, seeing Boss Baby grow up and star in a movie took a little adjusting. While Frazee has paid close attention to the film-making process, she believes that, as with raising any child, there comes a time to let go. “I’ve been privy to this process, but my big job was to mind my own business. Not Boss Baby’s. All moms must ...

... media reports indicate that 20 th Century Fox paid Belgrade-resident Đinović – the son of a retired policeman – first four and then five bitcoin. Apparently, that was not enough to satisfy the 26-year-old, but in any event, things didn’t end well. After being arrested by local police, Đinović appeared at the High Prosecutor’s Office charged with extorting both 20 th Century Fox and Dreamworks. The judge ordered him to be held in pre-trial detention for 30 days. Sources close to the investigation inform local news outlet Novosti that he faces up to 10 years in prison. ... drawings have been brought to life. The most recent trailer seems to acknowledge that it’s just the latest in a series of movies to have their heroes recast, with narration intoning how there’s “a new caped crusader” and “a new amazing web-slinger,” nods to how both Batman and Spider-Man regularly feature new actors under the masks. Now, the ad continues, there’s a new hero “who dares to be wimpy.” The graphics that play under the narration are also similar to Marvel Studios’ now-famous page-flipping motif. (Side note: I don’t think we’re making a big enough deal of the fact that the dad in the first movies was played by Steve Zahn, and now he’s being played by Tom Everett Scott. If the series is recast again in the future, I demand either Johnathon Schaech or Ethan Embry be cast as the dad.). When Disney was selling what would go on to be ...

... maybe, right next door”) would then compel J. K. Rowling fans to give Pixar’s latest a try. And given that Monsters, Inc.‘s box office actually went up the weekend after “Charades” began playing in front of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this was clearly a pretty effective piece of promotion. So now that Disney & Dream Works Animation appear to have buried the hatchet, will tranquility reign in Toontown? Well, you have to remember that Hollywood’s landscape has radically changed since 1997. These days, there are all sorts of animation studios out there (Among them Blue Sky , Illumination Entertainment , LAIKA , Sony Pictures Animation and Warner Animation Group ) that are producing acclaimed animated films that are seriously connecting with audience around the globe. So just because Disney & Dream Works Animation have entered a relatively peaceful period doesn’t mean that the people who run all of these other animation studios aren’t ...

They include Steve Buscemi as a former Babycorp exec harboring a serious grudge; Tobey Maguire, handling narration as Tim’s older self; and James Mc Grath (the director’s nephew) as Wizzie, Tim’s amusingly theatrical, Gandalf-like, talking wizard alarm clock. Visually, there’s a retro look and feel to the animation that plays affectionate homage to Looney Tunes legends Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Friz Freleng, while simultaneously drawing upon new wrinkles in computer animation that allow the action to follow the lead of Tim’s vivid fantasy life. Those nostalgic underpinnings are also nicely incorporated into the appropriately bubbly score by Hans Zimmer and frequent collaborator Steve Mazzaro. Production company: Dream Works Animation. Miles is the grandson of animator Ralph Bakshi, of “Fritz the Cat” fame, who was the first person to hire Mc Grath as an animator and layout artist on 1992’s “Cool World.”. “Ralph kind of showed me the ropes of the industry at the time, of traditional animation,” Mc Grath says. “What to do, what not to do. He was, in a way, a father figure to me.”. “My best friend is (“Trolls” producer) Gina Shay, Miles Bakshi’s mom,” Naito adds. “I’ve known Miles since the first day he was born. I saw him probably an hour after he was born.”. After creating a realistic-looking world in “Megamind,” Mc Grath was eager to get back to a more colorful and stylized look of classic animation. He grew up watching Disney movies, and remembers appreciating the art of films like “Dumbo.” He also remembers Saturday morning cartoons. “My father would get up early on Saturday, and we’d watch Bugs Bunny together,” he says. “He would laugh at certain ...
