Uc Davis, Longest Of Long Shots, Keeps Its Cool Amid March Madness

... Basketball was not on the minds of many Tuesday at UC Davis, where. Las Vegas oddsmakers have a number for this sort of long shot. The official odds are 5,000-to-1 against Davis winning the national championship. Bet a penny to win $50. Even at those odds, experts say the bookies would be stealing your penny. Realistically, the Aggies’ odds reside somewhere in Powerball territory. On Tuesday, the campus and the city were trying to figure out what their sudden trip to the fringes of the limelight meant. Most fans were realists, in search of the right euphemism for “hopeless.”. “The journey continues,” said Assistant Athletics Director Scott Brayton, “This is a moment of togetherness. For us to be where we are, that’s enough. This is a moment of hope. That’s how I would put it.”. Photo: Michael Macor, The Chronicle. Image 1 of/3. Image 1 of 3. ... The graduate class has a similar goal in combining multiple science fields and applying those fields to find stream management solutions. Within this class, students take a weeklong trip to the Grand Canyon, rafting in the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon serves as a prime location for educational research because it combines concepts of geology, biology, hydrology and more. Students who take the course get the opportunity to spend a week collaborating with faculty and other students from a wide range of backgrounds. “We want these classes to be a truly interdisciplinary [experience],” said Sarah Yarnell, a research hydrologist at the Center for Watershed Sciences. “We want them to be as diverse as possible so students have the opportunity to learn from one another.”. Students from a variety of departments, ranging from geology to environmental engineering, have taken these courses. On the Grand Canyon trip, students spend time exploring the national park, coming up with hypotheses and working together in order to understand and interpret topics from class. ... to do that, I would put us in a successful position to score most of the time.". Down by three points at halftime, the Aggies went on an 11-2 run to start the second half, and led by as many as nine before streaky North Carolina Central (25-9) forced some turnovers and chipped away at the lead. The Eagles pulled within 64-63 with 1:49 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Dajuan Graf. They got the ball back with 37 seconds left, but another 3-point try by Graf was off the mark. ... not going to back down to nobody,” Lemar said. “I don’t care who you are.”. That basket culminated the Aggies’ surge from a 42-42 tie in the final 2:44, a spurt aided by turnovers. A traveling violation against Smith led to Lemar’s driving layup with 2:12 left. Nelson followed by missing a 3-pointer. Chima Moneke grabbed the rebound, got fouled by Tommy Rutherford and made both free throws to extend the lead to four points with 1:30 left. The Anteaters ruined their next possession when Spencer Rivers committed an offensive foul 20 seconds later. But Nelson replied to Lemar’s dramatic score by making a 3-pointer with 7.3 seconds left that narrowed the deficit to 48-47. However, Lemar’s two free throws with 5.8 seconds enabled UC Davis to make history. Before Lemar’s late performance, neither team took firm control until the end. The Aggies exploited the Anteaters’ early tendency toward self-sabotage. ...

... DAVIS (CBS 13) — The NBA champs the Cleveland Cavaliers were on TV Sunday at Woodstock’s Pizza in downtown Davis. For the first time for this school, this program to be going to the tournament,” said Gurtej Bhattal, an engineering student at UC Davis. He was at Woodstock’s, which will broadcast all the UC Davis games. Like others, Bhattal knows there is more than just basketball at stake as the Aggies make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. “To put us on map in the sports world, the sports map. Uc Davis’ J.t. Adenrele Takes Long, Challenging Road To Big Dance

... injuries, one in each knee. He endured grueling rehabs and wondered at times if his playing career was done. I remember walking into Coach (Jim) Les’ office and telling him the news. I hugged him and I cried, man. I wept. I was scared. I didn’t know if I would be able to come back. I didn’t know if I’d have the heart to come back. J. T. Adenrele, UC Davis senior forward. But he returned this season to post modest averages of 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds for an Aggies team that won 19 regular-season games and three more to win the Big West Conference Tournament. The knees held up. He’s going dancing. “He just finds a knack in games to make plays that are game-changing plays,” Les said. “The stats don’t tell the story but, if you watch him and watch him in crunch time, he’s invaluable to this team and a big reason why we are where we are.”. Les and Adenrele arrived in Davis the same year. But little about that season ...

Car Of The Future Is Driverless, Shared, Electric, Uc Davis Survey Says

... the first time in half a century, real, transformative innovations are coming to the world of passenger transportation,” said Dan Sperling, director of ITS-Davis and the new 3 Revolutions Policy Initiative. “This survey shows us that without thoughtful collaboration and community-facing policies, these changes would lead to increased inequities, vehicle travel, and greenhouse gas emissions. We need to be creative in order to steer these innovations to the public interest.”. But has hopeful and forward-looking as Sperling and the survey may be, it comes as some states have begun to whittle away at tax incentives that helped electric vehicles gain a small but steadily rising share of the U. S. automobile market in the past several years. In some states, there is a move to repeal tax credits for battery-powered vehicles or let them expire. And some states either repealed tax credits (Georgia in 2015) or have introduced bills (Illinois and Indiana, for example) that would impose a special fee on those who own electric cars. ...
