Giannis Is More Athletic, Longer & Faster Than Me
Giannis Is More Athletic, Longer & Faster Than Me

... with Bill Simmons on The Bill Simmons Podcast last week and talked about the future of the NBA. Fittingly, the discussion centered around the Bucks very own Giannis Antetokounmpo. “Look at Giannis,” Durant said. “Giannis Antetokounmpo, this guy is scary.". “He’s more athletic than I am. He’s longer than me. He’s faster. He’s going to be stronger than I am.”. Durant, who has led the league in scoring four times and is currently in his first season with the Golden State Warriors where he’s averaging 25.8 points per game, knew about Giannis right away. He recalled playing a game in Milwaukee where he had one of his first encounters with Antetokounmpo. “I saw how hard he played his rookie year and I was like this guy plays extremely hard. A lot of people told me he looked up to me, and I didn’t know that, but a lot of people said that. We played in Milwaukee one time and I was working out before the game and I just saw him staring at me, just watching me the whole time. I was like it feels good that I can influence a young guy like that.”. Fast forward a few years, and a few days before he makes his first All-Star ...

... day that he was a very special player and he was beyond committed to being excellent. This is not an accident that he ended up here.”. Antetokounmpo has spent so much time at the Cousins Center, the Bucks’ practice facility, that he calls it “home.”. “A lot of work, a lot of sweat,” Antetokounmpo said Saturday as he spoke to reporters after the East squad’s practice at the Superdome. “A lot of days that I was disappointed. A lot of down days, a lot of up days. “But it all leads up to this. That makes me want to work harder. So looking forward, better things will come.”. On Sunday night the 22-year-old native of Athens will be starting alongside Le Bron James, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving and De Mar De Rozan. Antetokounmpo has enjoyed every moment of the all-star weekend, from hanging out with his brothers in his hotel room Saturday, to watching co-owner Marc Lasry in the celebrity game to taking the court for the all-star practice. We Need To Stop Calling Giannis Antetokounmpo An Alien
We Need To Stop Calling Giannis Antetokounmpo An Alien

... Yes, #But Actually naysayers out there, I get the general premise. Aliens are otherworldy, their impossibly peculiar physical composition connoting an overlord demeanor and supposed athletic superiority. But here’s the thing, there’s little to no actual evidence aliens contain a shred of skill necessary to play the game of basketball. Indeed, even in fiction the preponderance of evidence points to the contrary. This false anointment is due likely to the lingering aura of “Space Jam,” a seminal 1996 animated basketball film whose heyday coincided with the formative years of a glut of writers now waxing poetic about the sport. “Space Jam” planted the illogical seed, and the constant cries for a remake fertilized the fervor diligently over these past 20-odd years. To be fair, Space Jam does a bang-up job portraying the unstoppable power of the Mon Stars, the Alien team that takes on Michael Jordan’s Looney Tunes crew. Menacing with bulging muscles that test a jersey seam’s integrity more than Glen Davis ’ gut, the Mon Stars were designed specifically to obfuscate the real way these players should be remembered. For the time, the team’s versatility was truly ...

The Political Context Of Giannis Antetokounmpo's Rise To Nba Stardom
The Political Context Of Giannis Antetokounmpo's Rise To Nba Stardom

... is so remarkable precisely because of this history. He joined his parents selling watches and wallets on the streets of Greece along with his four brothers to put food on the table. “Sometimes, our fridge was empty,” he said to the New York Times in 2013. “Some days, we didn’t sell the stuff and we didn’t have money to feed ourselves.”. It’s difficult to look at the story of Giannis Antetokounmpo and not think of our own country, where a President was elected by whipping up hostility, hatred and even violence against immigrant communities in the United States. (An immigrant church was vandalized with “Trump Nation/Whites Only” and an elderly El Salvadoran woman was attacked minutes from my house, so forgive me for not biting my tongue about this.). To celebrate Giannis’ triumph as a basketball player is to ...
